    If Congress had passed the Crittenden Compromise

    If you were a member of Congress in 1860, would you have voted for this compromise to avoid war?

    Absolutely not! Slavery would have continued unabated.

    Salty, Me and my wife just saw the new movie: Lincoln and it deslt with politics during that period, very eye opening.

    I don't know if the War of Northern Aggression could have been permanently avoided or not, BUT, I do that if the suggestion offered by POTUS Franklin Pierce's Secretary of War (1853-57) advice would have been implemented in the mid-1850's, the firing on the Union Army's Ft. Sumter (which most historians will tell us was the "spark" that ignited The WONA) probably would not have happened.

    His advice = Let the Atlantic coastal forts (such as Sumter) be manned by the state militia of whatever state in which said fort is located. Thus, realizing a signicant cost reduction in defense spending. :thumbs: :applause:

    Pierce's Secretary of War = Jefferson Davis! :smilewinkgrin:
