The way that we pray

Well, Webster says it could mean the following so I guess it's not that far out there:

1. To set apart for sacred use; consecrate.
2. To make holy; purify.
3. To give religious sanction to, as with an oath or vow: sanctify a marriage.
4. To give social or moral sanction to.
5. To make productive of holiness or spiritual blessing.

 

I have heard that before, someone asking God to "bless this food, sanctify it and make it holy". It's not something I say, but maybe it's not that unusual.

 

Does this mean that the calories won't be stored as fat :laugh:

3 They forbid marriage and demand abstinence from foods that God created to be received with gratitude by those who believe and know the truth.
4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing should be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,
5 since it is sanctified by the word of God and by prayer.

We often pray without giving thought to the words that we are saying especially when it comes to meal times.
"Lord bless this food..."
The food does not need to be blessed, God has already blessed it, in the same way that He has already sanctified it--set it apart for our use.
We are commanded only to give thanks. Give thanks in all things.

So to say "We thank you for blessing and sanctifying this food" should be appropriate, right?

 

Southern Baptists are real good at praying the same thing over and over. When someone introduces something new, they pick right up on it. For example, the next time they pray, they'll add "Bless this food to the nourishment of our bodies and our lives to thy service." Yes, if the one who started it said "thy", then all the repeaters follow right along. Personally, I don't know what my prayer is going to say before I say it, so I don't get called on a lot in my SB circles. :saint:

 

Ever been praying out loud for a group and start to say something that you can tell isn't going to make sense? Then you either have to backtrack or try to force it to fit some kind of logic? :laugh:

The other day one of our staff men was leading the congregation in prayer before the preaching and he said "Lord, its such a great privilege to be a King....." He had meant to say child of the King, but it came out wrong and he couldn't catch himself in time.

We all get flustered and say things that maybe don't make alot of sense.

These things happen......

It's easier in Japanese, where the verb comes last, so I can usually make it sound sensible before I end the sentence--after wandering around awhile.:smilewinkgrin:

I always loved this story about your grandfather, and it seems it fits here- Once when he prayed at a meeting, he prayed to the Holy Ghost. After the service a lady approached him and asked him why he prayed to the Holy Ghost instead of to Jesus. He looked over his glasses at her (in my mind I can see him now) and replied, "Dear sister, when you know one member of the family, you know them all."
