Study: Number of 'able-bodied' adults on food stamps doubled after stimulus change

A new government study found that the number of able-bodied adults on food stamps nearly doubled after Washington used the stimulus law to lift a key work requirement.

The report from the Congressional Research Service was sent last week to House Republican Leader Eric Cantor. It comes as House Republicans prepare Thursday to try and block a separate work requirement waiver being sought by the Obama administration for welfare recipients.

The CRS study dealt with the work requirement for a particular class of food-stamp recipients -- "able-bodied adults" between 18 and 49 years old who have no dependents. Typically the food stamp program requires that group to work or participate in a training program at least 20 hours a week to continue receiving benefits after three months. The stimulus law, though, allowed states to suspend the rule from April 2009 to October 2010 -- and most states did.

In that time, the number in that group surged.

The CRS study showed that in fiscal 2010, the last year for which data was available, the number of food-stamp recipients in that group was at nearly 3.9 million. That's up from 1.9 million in 2008.

Another way of looking at is that the availability of food stamps and other programs caused able body people to choose not to work since there are jobs that go unfilled.

:laugh: I'm sure there are tons of unfilled jobs out there. I wish someone would have told me that when I was without a job. :laugh:

Actually there is something like 3 million job openings in the country that no one can or will fill.

I saw a story the other day similar in moral...a man goes to his friends house and was talking to their daughter and he asked what she wanted to be when she grew up. The little girl said "I want to be President so I can give food and housing to the homeless and hungry" without hesitation. Her liberal parents smiled big. The man said "You don't have to wait until then to do that. I tell you what...come over to my house everyday and clean the house, wash dishes, do laundry, and cut the yard and I'll pay you $50 a day. On Friday I'll take you to the supermarket near where the homeless stay and you can give them your $250 every week and they can buy food and put money towards a house." The little girl looked him dead in the eye and said "Why don't they just come to your house and do the work themselves and earn the money instead of waiting for me to earn it and give to them?" The man said "Welcome to the Republican party!" Her parents still aren't talking to him.

I believe it is a debit card and the purpose is to cut food stamp fraud.

The down side is it is a way of hiding the poor people from public view. During the last depression the poor people had to stand in lines in public.

My dad didn't stand in food lines during the Roosevelt Depression. He worked to feed a family of 10. Yes we ate a lot of soup beans and corn bread with oatmeal for breakfast [No grits, no black eyed peas please.] but we never took a handout.

And if you think it is just poor people who get free food you are in never, never land!
