The Word, John 1

Today, I had the opportunity to take my choirs to sing at a chapel service of a missionary Baptist Bible college in our area. The speaker was a well-known (in our area) pastor and he said somethings that greatly bothered me. Now I know that I am looking at this as an SBCer, but even putting that aside, I was trying to be open to hearing what he had to say.

As he was emphasizing the importance of the King James version, he quoted John 1:1 to support his statements. "In the behinning was the Word, and the WOrd was with God, and the Word was God." We all know that verse, but he said that the "Word" there was the inspired preserved word of God and held up his Bible, stating that what God inspires, He preserves. I was flabbergasted by the response of the audience as they waved their Bibles and shouted in affirmation.

My question here is not to instigate a debate, but I just want to know if that is the view of most Christians who lean that way denominationally.

    Mrs. Tot,
I'd be wondering how his "word" became flesh and dwelt among men...
This guy is a goof ball (is it OK to call someone a goof ball on the BB?).

It might be okay, but whether it is or isn't, it doesn't help your argument.

The word word in the Greek is logos, and is not a reference to a written document, but a personification of that Word. This is called the INCARNATION -- thus the verses following [in context] which say "And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us."

This type of misapplication of the text sets a dangerous precedent, equating the Bible with Jesus Himself. That's called Bibliolatry. WHile the Bible is without a doubt the inspired, infallible and inerrant Word of God - it is NOT God.

Remember the words of Jesus: "You search the scriptures, for in them you think you have life; and they are they which testify of me, but you will not come to Me that you might have life" (John 5:39,40).

People who hold this view ought to tread lightly. This kind of confusion can endanger souls.

Very good post JDale! I agree. I have heard this type of thought before.

As far as I am concerned it is a combination of arrogance and ignorance.

Ignorance of the Word of God and what it truly says and doesn't say.

Arrogance to focus on such silly things and then to get applauded for it.

I'm going to have to call shenanigans. You can't make any distinction between the word of God and the Word of God based on the word 'logos'.

The term Λογος is applied to Christ only in John 1:1,14; Revelation 19:13; 1 John 1:1. It comes from λεγω (lego), which is an old word meaning to lay by, to collect, to put words side by side, to speak, to express an opinion. Λογος is common for reason as well as speech. The Stoics employed it for the soul of the world and Marcus Aurelius used σπερματικος λογος/spermatikos logos for the generative principle in nature. Heraclitus used it for the principle that controls the universe.

But, when you see the phrase "Word of God", the scriptures are trying to draw attention to something specifically, and it's always a Kingdom message.

    Preach it JDale!

I am KJV preferred, but it seems to me to be the height of arrogance to arbiraraily declare only one Bible version to be the Word of God.

I'm sorry, but to me that treads on the border of idolatry. That is almost Sandersonesque!

Are you asking how a KJV1611 is different from the Word spoken of in John?

no. I am asking how the bible is different from the word of God. If I hold up my bible, is it not the word of God? If not, how is it different?

From the sound of the op it doesn't sound like that's what was implied. Whenever "preserved" is thrown in there, it is almost always KJVO.

Thats an interesting question, but I never claimed they were. God however says that His Word is Him. How am I to understand this?
