The "wow moment"

    Have any of you every experienced a "wow moment" when preparing a sermon? Thats what I call when your heart is overwhelmed with the grandeur and beauty of a particular passage that that it leaves you speechless, and only your heart beats in passionate adoration of the Lord God Almighty.

    It had one of those this past week preparing a sermon on 1 Peter 25-24. I just could not get over the incredible paradox of the cross- the just for the unjust, the Immortal for the mortal, the Perfect for the imperfect. Christ made the greatest sacrifice for to give the most precious gift, to the most unworthy of recipients.

    Anyhow, What texts have gripped your in a special way as you studied them?

    Last week - 1 Corinthians 1v18-25

    The marvelous foolishness of the cross - "nuff said."

    John 11:40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

    I preach this chapter yesterday morning. This verse was the main focus.

    I love these moments. I prefer they come during my study and preparation and not during the delivery, but I have had both happen. In private I can open up before God and be still. In public I have to keep going, but that doesn't happen, really.

    Some of those moments have come with Roger's passage and the foolishness of the cross (still gets tears thinking about that one), John 21 and Jesus asking peter if he loves Him, Romans/Galations on our adoption as God's children, the first chapter of First Peter (I think it is verses 1-10... I'm at work right now).

    I had one of these last week while teaching the teens. The lesson was on the fruit of the Spirit, but the passage was John 15:1-5. it was all I could do to not break down, but I think I really got the message across.

    I have had these moments happen both in the study and while preaching.

    IMO, one of the coolest things about preaching is those moments where as you are preaching the text just opens up and comes alive and you see the greatness of God and His powerful word. It always amazes me and reminds me that God is truly in control!

    As I was reading Matthew 14:22-36 this week verses 34-36 came alive for me. I have brought messages from this passage dealing with all sorts of topics like fear, faith and obediance. But as I was reading this passage again these last few verses came alive and I saw even more than I had ever before. Even after the disciples fear and Peter sinking and feeling like a failure. Jesus got into the boat brought with him peace. Everyone worshipped, and then they crossed over to the other side and went back to work. Even with what they saw as failure and what Jesus addressed as a "lack of faith" Jesus was not done with them, He still wanted to use them for His purpose.

    Man what a good word for those of us that have done more than a little sinkng lately!

    I had one of those this past Monday night when i began researching my passage for this coming Sunday and God opened up an outline for me that i think not only clearly exposes the passage but also makes a clear path straight to the cross. God is good!
