Their Faith Hath Forgiven You

Matthew 9:2 NKJV
Then behold, they brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, "Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you."

What is going on here? It sounds like because of the faith of his friends, his sins are forgiven.

The purpose is explained per Matthew 9:3-7, . . . And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?
For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. And he arose, and departed to his house. . . .

I like what Calvin says here...
"There is a synecdoche, therefore, in the word their, when it is said that Jesus saw their faith: for Christ not only looked at those who brought the paralytic, but looked also at his faith." I completely overlooked this fact.

I can imagine that the paralyzed man probably LED THE CHARGE to get to Christ (as best he could "lead" - that might not be the best turn of phrase :) ). Word that Jesus heals gets out; wouldn't the person needing healing be the most adamant and have the most faith?

Surely that would be faith on behalf of the paralytic, but I was wondering why the Scripture says, 'when Jesus saw their [ faith, when in actuality it was the paralytic's faith.
