Theology of fasting

Listened to a GREAT Charles Stanley sermon today on the topic. According to Stanley we still should fast for various reasons. I am not sure on this topic, and am interested in opinions. Should we be fasting today?

We should, and I do (but don't tell anyone about it save my wife and a fellow minister with whom I share an accountability relationship.)

Fasting can change your life and bring you to amazing places in your relationship with Christ.

Perhaps I should do it then. Strange why MacArthur rarely ever touches this topic.

Fasting is an important spiritual discipline that has gotten lost in our indulgent society.

Perhaps this is another example of why we need to listen to numerous voices for different perpsectives.

Dr. Stanley seems to focus on practices which will aid his listeners. Dr. MacArthur desires to help people grow through biblical foundations. Two different approaches to the same goal...growth.

I would, however, give you pause before you jump into fasting:
1. Make sure it's God-led. The best examples of effective fasting are times when God clearly leads someone(s) into the practice. If we force the matter without divine direction we often are just spinning our wheels.

2. Check out some resources that can help explain the biblical method and types of fasting. The best book I've read on the matter is Fasting for Spiritual Breakthrough by Elmer Towns. Outstanding text.

I have grown immensely in fasting. Though it remains an intensely private matter, it has caused great growth in my life. :)

No more books!!! Please… I have so many books I cant finish them all! I just looked at Stanley's book on prayer that I have and he has a chapter on fasting so this may be best. Thanks for the suggestions though.
