Sin cannot be restricted only to thoughts where the will is engaged to carry out those thoughts. It is sin when we do not resist evil thoughts but instead choose simply to contemplate upon them regardless if we determine to put them into external acts or not. We are commanded to bring every thought into obedience to Christ and when we fail to do that we sin.

The thought world can be an absolute den of iniquity never volitionally carried out into actions but volitionally permitted to be contemplated as day dreams. Hence, sin occurs when we fail to resist sinful thoughts but choose to merely speculate and surmise over them. A Poor man may permit his thought life to dream of riches and imagine all kinds of sinful thoughts and yet never be provided any providential circumstance to put his dreams into actions or choose to actually commit such thoughts to actions.

The heart of man is evil and therefore Jesus describes man as "being evil" and talks about the "evil treasure" or his heart from which "evil" things are derived in his thought life. Romans 8:7 literally speaks of the "MINDSET" which is at war against God and is not subject to the law of God and NEITHER INDEED CAN BE" as the STATE of the lost man by nature.

Love "thinketh no evil" or else it ceases to be love and therefore to think evil is something that a person dominated by love CANNOT DO! Hence, God has a righteous heart which is incapable of thinking evil. Therefore, to be able to think evil proves man has a sinful heart and thus "being evil."

The OP is about proving that sin is not limited to merely thoughts that engage the will to carry out what is thought. It is to prove that sin originates with any evil thought at the point it is not resisted by the will but allowed to be meditated upon regardless if it is actualized or manifested outside the mind.

I don't see how anyone could disagree with the OP. So you probably won't get much of a response.

The human brain tends to ignore the negative words in negative statements so every time you pray, "Lead us not into temptation . . . ."

The only point that comes to mind is the way Jesus explains the ten commandments compared to the OT account. For example, you shall not commit adultry in the OT referred to a physical act, whereas, Jesus says it includes the thought process of looking at a woman, an act called lust. Or take murder, it is not just the physical act. It is a continual hating of someone in the heart. You could go through each of the ten commandments and make the same analogy. It shows the true totality of our sinfulness. It also shows how much we really need a Savior. Jesus added new diminsions to what sin really means, the mind.

Two points should be made. One is that the initial thought is not a sin if we dismiss it with the power of the Spirit in us. It is when we play with the idea, toy with it, develope it, feed off it in our mind for self gratification, even if we do not physiclally act on the thought. The second point is that Scripture says we will give an account for every idle thought, motive, or deed.

Jesus knew the totality of the human heart, and did us a great favor (along with everything else He did for us) by describing how wicked we are. The reason we are better at not sinning physically is because of physical consequences, not a pure character. For example, physically acting out adultry results in divorce and a loss of money and reputation. Physically acting out murder results in long prison sentences. However, to the Lord, the thought process that leads to the act is just as bad, and demands a payment for that sin just like the actual act. In reality, we are not good at physically or thought wish refraining from sin without the Lord. The physical side is just less intense because of consequences here on earth.
