Three reasons the left hated Jesse Helms

...1. Unmitigated anti-Southern bigotry. There really isn’t much need to elaborate on this one. Senator Helms spoke with a slow southern drawl. I’ll even admit that he often sounded like he had a golf ball stuck in his mouth. But for anti-Southern bigots this is ample proof of having a below-room-temperature IQ....

...2. Helms’ Repudiation of Communism. Communists are attracted to university systems because of the tenure system. It’s all very simple. A professor only has to play the “from each according to his ability” role for about five years. After he gets tenure, he can play “to each according to his need” until he retires. That is why I call professors “parasites” – as opposed to something crude, or even sexist, like “lazy bastards.”...

...3. Helms’ Repudiation of Racial Propaganda. Jesse Helms was accused of spreading racial propaganda when he ran an ad in 1990 showing a pair of white hands opening a job rejection letter. In the background, a voice said something like “you knew you were more qualified for that job but they had to give it to a minority.” Liberals were incensed by this completely accurate portrayal of quota-based affirmative action, which was a) in effect in North Carolina, and b) supported by Helms’ black opponent, Harvey Gant...

While I never hated him, I did dislike him a lot.

I am from North Carolina. During my years as a practicing homosexual I lived a great deal of the time in Raleigh, NC and I disliked Helms because of his stance against the homosexual community. In my opinion, he took a stance that was crossing the line. He blamed the gay community for HIV, he wanted them all to be put on an island, he cut funding for AIDs research because it was a "gay disease".

Still to this day, even though I am not longer in that lifestyle, when someone submits such a blanket statement I will dislike that statement, and when someone makes a life of such statements I will end up disliking that person.

In my opinion, he was nothing more than a paid bigot.

He did support the AIDS research in Africa.

And although you and I will probably never agree on who is at fault for spreading the virus, I know exactly why gays hated his stance.

You probably feel even worse about the Old Testament. Seems like for all the $ that was spent fighting AIDS, the real success has been in the prevention department. Gay men are still the number 1 transmitter of the virus. When blood started getting screened, people like Ryan White stopped getting it. Even C. Everett Koop stated that, and I will spend a little time pouring thru books to get the reference. Check back in a bit. Thank God you left that lifestyle, Jamie, and thank God you are OK.

Any more examples of his bigotry ?

As I pointed out on the 9/11 thread anyone who is anti communist is hated by the left. The other two items were just like icing on the cake.

In his last year as a Senator, but what did that do for the many people with AIDs? When AIDs first came out, it was the "gay disease" so many people didn't want to fund a cure.. I guess it only ranks as a good reason to spend research money when it's "your" kind. I don't have cancer, does that mena I shouldnt support cancer research? See where I am going with this?

You are correct, because I don't blame the gay community. They didn't help, but I can't say it was their fault either. Truth is, no one knows where it came from.

Not sure what you meant by felt worse about the Old Testament.. As far as money being spent, it's always better to spend on prevention, you get better results, but that shouldn't stop one from trying to cure it too.

Of course screening will prevent it from spreading, same as it stops a lot of other STD's. Also, speaking of Ryan White.. When you blanket state that this disease is a 'gay' disease like Helms did SO many times, then the "Ryan Whites" will get hit in the cross fire everytime.

Yes, thank God I did leave. It's still a struggle every day, but I am doing fine. It is amazing that I am not dead. I am very thankful that I was shielded and saved.

No, to me he has enough in that category for me to form my opinion of him. I am sure they exsist, I just don't know about them.

On Feb 19, 1988 there is a U.P.I. report that has Koop, under oath, admitting that only 2.3% of AIDS cases came from heterosexual contact, and most of those were intravenous drug users.

I won't be able to find a link. My source cites "Koop Criticizes Cosmo, UPI 1988".

And no, I will not let my source become the focal point of this issue.

I liked Jesse Helms for his support of states rights and his pro-American stances. There is one thing that always puzzled me about him though, and even bothered me at the time. Do you all remember towards the end of his career, how he cozied up to Clinton's Secretary of State, Madalin Albright? That made no sense to me, as they were 180 out on most issues. Does anyoen have an explanation for that?

Jamie, I like you well enough for your honesty. But I do consider AIDS a gay disease. It started with them, spread thru them, and even when faced with hundreds of gays suffering agonizing deaths, they refused to shut down the bath houses where everyone knew they were catching this. They traced the airline steward, "patient zero" to the gay SF bath houses. Ryan White died due to the cowardice of the American lawmakers, and to the purposeful contamination of the blood supply. It is well documented how the supply was fouled.

Sorry for you. AIDS always has been a preventable disease. Cancer is not.

I don't doubt your source, of that Koop said it. What I do question and will have to research is, in 1988 AIDs was still something new. Even if what Koop said was true, which I don't doubt, you can't label a disease by the people it started with. Do you, or anyone else do that for every other diease? If not, why? If so, name a few off the top of your head.

We agree in that the gay community could have and should have done MORE to stop this and prevent it. I agree that there were, are ignorant people out there, but that still doesn't make is a gay diease. Makes them relible for helping spread it, but not their diease.

I guess I just don't like balnket statements like it's a "gay thing"... people have used that aganist me most of my life and I never liked it. Now that I have "grown" up if you will, and come to know the Lord, I feel I can reach people in the gay community, but how many people do you think I could reach if I just picked up the labels and started slinging them around? Labels did nothing but make me a stronger gay supporter when I lived that lifestyle and they never really help change anyone.

Helms did more damage then good in my opinion when it comes to overcoming the problem. His label cause many to follow his example and in the end, work won't done to stop/prevent this diease in a timely manner.

It's really hard for me to put into words what I mean here. I often joke that I am from the South and that's why I don't know English, or how to say things in written form that well, but if I could tell describe what I am feeling, I believe you wuold understand.

Jamie

Genital herpes & venereal diseases are two examples of "promiscuity" disorders. Completely avoidable. Spread thru promiscuous sexual contact.

I would also call "black lung" a "miners disease".

Ok, I agree with those, but I never said that AIDs couldn't be prevented. AIDs like many other diseases can be prevented.

That's one. The difference I see in this, is how many cases of Black Lung do you have in the US? This disease is defined by the location/job of the person, unlike AIDs where you can get it from unprotected sex, blood, and drug use, and several other ways.

This is why you can't label, or shouldn't label it a gay disease. It does nothing to prevent it and in fact probably causes more harm than good because 'budda' now thinks he can have sex with those protiuists because AIDs is a gay diease and he is having sex with a laby, so he should be alright..

I don't want to argue with you on this any more. I didn't like Helms was of 'doing business' and I think he was a bigot. It doesn't matter now, he had passed away and will have to bare his life to Christ and Christ only.

I guess I'll go back to Koop's 2.3% figure. I'm interested if anyone can find the report I cited.

But I am glad that we can discuss it and not take cheap shots at each other.

Take care, Jamie.

I think this is the paper you're talking about:

http://profiles.nlm.nih.gov/QQ/B/D/P/M/_/qqbdpm.pdf

Also, it is good to disagree without beating each other up.. Everyone has an opinion, and that largely is based on someone's life. My opinion of Helms might have been different if I were not in the gay community for most of my life.

You take care also! Hey, did you see my new tattoo? My break from that lifestyle was what brought about that tattoo. I needed and wanted to take a stand for my new life in Christ, and thought this was be good way to do it.
