The only thing sicker than the mans doctrine is the verdict against him.

VIENNA, Austria (AP) - Right-wing British historian David Irving was sentenced to three years in prison Monday after admitting to an Austrian court that he denied the Holocaust - a crime in the country where Hitler was born.

Agreed. Bro. James is right on the money. Holocaust denial is the refuge of some real wackos and is a wacko idea, but it is wrong to throw someone in prison because of an historical belief.

    1984...

"The thought police would get him just the same. He had
committed—would have committed, even if he had never set
pen to paper—the essential crime that contained all others
in itself. Thoughtcrime, they called it. Thoughtcrime was
not a thing that could be concealed forever. You might dodge
successfully for a while, even for years, but sooner or
later they were bound to get you."

"Thoughtcrime does not entail death: thoughtcrime is death."

"And if all others accepted the lie which the Party
imposed—if all records told the same tale—then the lie
passed into history and became truth. 'Who controls the
past' ran the Party slogan, 'controls the future: who
controls the present controls the past.'"

Spooky isn't it. I don't like it, even across the Atlantic.

As distasteful as I find his views, he has every right to have them.

Ironically, Hitler would have loved the idea of "thought crimes."

The measure of a free society is the degree to which people with desipicable ideas are free to speak them.

    -----------------------------------------

Some forget the McCarthy "thought" police in America. 100's were persecuted by a senate committee and smeared for life. The same country that burned Bibles during the Second World War.....oh right, they were printed in German!

In Canada, Jehovah's Witnesses were jailed because they refused to take up arms. Baptist preachers were jailed for passing out gospel tracts in Quebec. The so-called free world is not without its faults when it comes to freedom of thought.

We ought not to be too quick to judge another country, especially the country that felt the pains of anti-semitism and suffered ignomy in world history over having the dastardly camps in their country.

    Cheers,

    Jim

PS. I quite agree that thought police are just plain wrong.

Considering Austria's close relationship with Hitler and the holocaust, I can understand why they don't want to allow that seed to grow again.

It's the law. He knowingly broke it. He pays the price.

We can't impose our constitution and judicial process on other nations, however odious we find them.
