Tipping at resturants

I've never heard that reasoning, but I do know, when I used to work for tips, that no one wanted to work on Sundays. Church goers are the worst tippers. When my wife used to work for tips, she had this one lady say, "We can't afford to tip because we gave at church today". To which my wife replied, "Me too".

 

I'll usually tip 15% no matter who the server is.

I've never heard that reasoning either.

My philosophy is this: if you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to eat out.

 

For those of you who tip well, please keep it up. Although I no longer work for tips, you're the reason that the good workers stay. So many people don't tip at all, that the good tippers make up for it.

BTW, as a former worker for tips, some of the tips were amazing. I've had a few $100+ tips, but I personally witnessed one person get tipped with a new car and another get tipped $7000.

I think a lot of people forget that.

I think a lot of people who claim the name of Christ, as Christians, worship money more than God.

I agree 100%.

I have also see Christians give a gospel tract in place of a tip. Now that is something that should never happen. If you leave a gospel tract, make sure to include a nice tip to go with it!

 

we like to tip generously. If the actual service (of the waiter) has been poor, we still give a decent tip, but not like normal. Many times, poor service is really masking poor management. Its not always the server's fault. And especially at out favorite restaurant, (Mexican) we have come to know the servers and we tip them well.

I always appreciated when someone recognized that a problem was not the result of the person with whom they were dealing, as well as those who were being tipped took responsibility for something wrong.

 

I used to work for tips and, trust me, if the tips don't come, a server can't work for long. The basic pay is so low that they have to receive the tips to survive...

I always tip and I tip well - IF the service is good. If the service is bad, I don't tip or I leave a very small tip.

I was a good server and I received good tips but I don't reward bad service...

I have received large tips from small tables and received nothing from large tables and vice versa.

Let's face it - some people just don't tip!

 

I tried waitress tipping one time. They wouldn't stand still.

My seester was a waitress a long time ago. She hated working on Sundays. She says the large groups were the hardest to deal with and would not tip very well.

I've been a part of a few of those groups. We crowd 15-20 people in a little cramped area, pushing 7 tables together and not leaving much room to move. Barking tea orders out like a pack of wolves. Shooting the waitress the evil eye every time she walks by and doesn't have someone's tea.

Give her/him a break. I have covered many tips for people who I don't think leave enough. Just because you're paying for it, doesn't mean I can't tip them.

 

t.i.p....Time in personal service. We always reward service. Our normal fare is 2o per cent at cafes and it varies at other venues.

At our regular haunts, I always buy loads of tins of European biscuits or English chocolates to give to each of the servers, including our mechanic and the owner of the shop, and the lads working at the feed mill.

When wife and daughters went to England last June, they took with them, Canadian dollar coins that were minted in honour of Terry Fox, who attempted to run across Canada on one leg in aid of cancer. It was an extra and was well received.

I really think tipping should be a pleasant event and not a duty. The customer should not be expected to supplement one's income; that is the responsibility of the business to pay appropriately.

Well, I rarely tip unless the service is fantastic. It isn't because I can't afford it , it's because I simply don't want to.

The restaurant corporations want us to pay their waiters/waitresses wages so they don't have to. If these workers have agreed to work for low wages that is between them and their employer. It's none of my business! If I'm supposed to pay 15-20% extra to cover their wages, why not add it into the cost of the meal?

 

Unfortunately, at least in the US, this has been turned on its head for eating establishments. While most everyone else is required to pay minimum wage (about $5.65 per hour right now I think), restaurants in our area pay about $1.75 to $2.50 (I'm guessing; I haven't heard an accurate number in a while). On top of that, wait staffers are required to report tips as income whether what they receive comes up to the correct percentage or not.

IMO, we should tip or not tip based on good service, but our country has so rigged it that the poor wait staff can't make a living without receiving really good tips. For that reason, we don't tip under 15%, and go up from there based on the quality of service.

 

Jim: In our area, waiters/waitresses only receive between $2.50 - $3.50 an hour for their salaries. The tips are what they depend on to live.

Waitressing is one of the hardest jobs I've ever worked, but I loved it because I love meeting people.

I don't think the wages should be that way, but I don't see it changing either...
