The NY Thurway (I-90 & 87) was built in the 50's as a toll rd. We were told that tolls would be ended when the bonds were paid off. Well, here it is decades after paying off the bonds and now we are still paying on the Thruway.

But now, my biggest gripe - is that all toll booths have been removed. If you have E-Z pass (which I do) its not a big problem -- BUT if you dont - they now have lazers or some kind of tech - that reads your license place. You will be billed once a month. BUT with out easy pass - you pay higher rates. In addition, there will be an admin charge of $2. In major cities - there may be several exits in or near the city. Thus some E-Z tolls are only 25 cents. But without E-Z pass - you would pay at least $2.25! And you are not aware of that -- if you are from out of state.!

Thus, I think it is time for Interstate routes to be toll free

Florida is toll road heaven. My local toll road (SR 570, Polk County Parkway) eliminated cash tolls on 9/23. You now have to have to pay via Sunpass/EZ Pass or toll-by-plate at a higher rate. The Orlando area has tolls on SR-429, SR-417, Central Florida Expressway, and the Florida Turnpike. I visit a lot of customers using those roads, so my toll cost is rather high.

And let's not forget they already use taxes for these expenditures as well so tolls truly are ridiculous. And the NEVER go away after the project is paid for.

Are there alternate routes to allow one to go to one's destination without the need to use any toll road?

As more and more electric cars join the roadways the means of paying for road repair will only increase toll roads nationwide.

The toll from Albany to buffalo is 9.77 (E-Z Pass) or $10.85 toll by mail + the $2 admin fee.
the distance is 288 miles and would take 4 hours and 10 minutes

Or you could travel NY Rt 5 - and it would be a little over 300 miles. The traveling time would probably be double as you would be going thur dozens of villages and cities.

But lets say, I am on I-81 and need to get to Carrier Circle (East of Syracuse)
    E-Z pass 18 cents, 21 cents (out of State E-Z pass) 23 cents by mail (+ 2.00 admin fee) = 2.23. Distance = 4 miles.

Reformed - do you have an E-Z Pass.

by going side roads - would be about 5 miles and about 11 minutes!

I travelled across Pennsylvania to Pittsburgh last weekend, about 300 miles.
I use E-ZPass, the cost would have been ~$43 (or cash ~$87).

I chose to take a longer toll-free route adding about 25 minutes to my time.

It has recently been reported that more than 100 million dollars of tolls went uncollected, chiefly from those not using E-ZPass.

Tolls are for those that use the toll roads. Making everyone pay just doesn’t seem fair.

The Maine Turnpike, also 1950s construction (and aka I-95), still collects tolls, but AFAIF every toll booth includes at least one cash lane. Same for the short span of I-95 in NH.
When our daughter/SIL/grandkids moved to Decatur, IL, I looked on Mapquest for the best (e.g. quickest) route for the 1,300 miles from our Maine foothills home. Their solution included I-95 to I-495 and I-295 (toll free), then I-90 (tolls!) all the way to I-80, lwhich becomes the Ohio Turnpike, with tools. We tossed that route and tried home-Scranton plus Scranton-Decatur. Mapquest said hat combo was 9 whole minutes longer, but without actually checking, I think about $15 cheaper each way. (Plus I've been in more time-stretching jams on the one link we drive on Mass Pike than on any other similar-length road.) We were very glad when my SIL was called to a church in South Jersey, even though we usually pay on the GS Parkway (longer but free alternative is I-287) and always on the Jersey Pike. 520 is much nicer than 1,300.

My post had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH POLITICS. If you travel to Florida be prepared to pay tolls. It is a fact.
