Man, I can't go that deep. Don't know that much about English versions. I usually use just a couple of English versions alongside my Hebrew and Greek testaments. But I will offer the following as far as what I usually compare.

    1. NASB95
    2. NIV
    3. NKJV
    4. NRSV
    5. KJV

The last three only get looked at on rare occasions.

General Purpose, i see. well, if u consider things like broad acceptance by churches, superiority/consistency of translators' technique, translators' commitment to inerrancy, variety of presentation (women's, soulwinners', etc.), i think there's one that comes out tops--the NIV.

but it ain't my fave [IMG]

tops for plain ole readability, esp among ESLs, will probably go to either the CEV or TEV.

in terms of having a clear American accent, the Message takes the cake. does what Phillips did for the English accent.

when it comes to swinging the Jacobean twang, ain't nufin cometh close to the KJB1611. now that we've associated that sound w things nostalgic n sentimental, it's hard to trade the KJB for anything at Christmas pageants n weddings.

    so there, i've named 6 tops. ;)
