Kind of a sorry list. Sorry in that (unless I messed some) there isn't a Bible in the list, there isn't a theology work in the list, and there isn't a commentary in the list.

Rather tells you where the Christian world is these days.

Not unlike most Christian book stores I've been over the last few years.

Sorry, but you are mistaken. That list is loaded with theology, devotional thought, depth of soul, personal help along spritual lines and there is a Bible.

I would say that you have not read J.I. Packer, if you say there is no theology in the list. Mere Christianity has been a classic book on apologetics...defence of the Christian faith for years. A.W. Tozer's book has taken more individuals into spritual life than any one book.

I suggest it is a very good list. If every member of the evangelical church read from this list and put into practice what is there, we would have a vibrant alive church.

    Cheers,

    Jim

A lot of great titles there. Some are new to me but I have heard of quite a lot of them and read a few. We never stop learning.

"That list is loaded with theology, devotional thought, depth of soul, personal help along spritual lines and there is a Bible."

Didn't say there wasn't theology in them, said "there isn't a theology work in the list, and there isn't a commentary in the list."

Didn't say there wasn't devotional thought, depth nor help either.

There are a couple that deal with some aspects of theology, but they aren't systematic theologies. Just ran the list and noticed the living Bible which many do not consider a Bible :) though loosly it might fit the catagory. :tongue3: Sorry I missed that one.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled program!

A few books that are not on this list that should or at least could be, IMO, would include
    1. The Scofield Reference Bible
    2. In His Steps by Charles Sheldon
    3. The NIV Bible version.
    4. Angels by Billy Graham
    5. Halley's and/or Unger's Bible Handbook
    6. The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale
    7. The Gospel According to Jesus by John A. MacArthur
    8. The Normal Christian Life by Watchman Nee

to name just a few. This is not to disparage the list, per se, but just to show that it is, at best, arbitrary, and represents merely varied opinions. Other authors while not perhaps having a single book that is on the list, but perhaps with more overall influence with multiple books might include John R. Rice and Lewis Sperry Chafer, and lately Max Lucado and N.T.Wright, to name four more.

And definitely, the King James Version of the Bible has to be on anybody's list for this day and age, among English speaking people. Just a few of my thoughts.

I am familiar with 17 of those books listed and have read all or parts of 12 of them but would have to say that the four most influential books of my life apart from the bible are the following.

The perfect will of God by Christian Weiss
Love, acceptance and forgiveness by David Cook
What the bible says about training up a child by Richard Fugate
Spiritual leadership by J Oswald Sanders

    Next would be

The books on prayer by E.M. Bounds
    Praying Hyde
The biographies of Mueller and Moody

Ever have one of those times your brain, took a vacation, and left your body behind? It took reading the follow-up to notice that I had managed to overlook The Battle for the Bible, by Harold Lindsell. Certainly one that belongs there!

Kind of interesting to me to find Tozer's "Knowledge of the Holy" on there and not "Pursuit of God"...maybe it's just me though.

Nice list. I think they missed the boat by not putting "Mere Christianity" in the number one spot.

Not a bad list. Some notable non-bibles that I would include have already been stated

In His Steps by Charles Sheldon
My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers
The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel

I see many of you are posting your faves, so I'd like EVERYONE to do that - put down your top books that you think EVERYONE should read and why. I'd love to get some more books in this house (ummm - then I'd need some more bookcases - DARN!! Oh, wait!! DH gets his office in 2 months so we can 'download' a lot to church - and I'll have more space!! Yeah!! Nothing like being a pastor's family who homeschools - LOTS of books! LOL!).

How can the NIV not be on the list?
