We were watching the SEC game last night from home when a tornado hit the downtown Atlanta area. There is damage to CNN, the GA Dome, several large buildings, houses, lots of huge billboards and trees blown down, etc. The downtown area is covered with debris and glass all over the streets. They've cancelled the St. Patrick's Day Parade and the Spring Home Show, among other things.

The miracle is that there was a shot at the last second that sent the SEC game into overtime, or all those people in the GA Dome would have been out on the street in the tornado. God was surely protecting them!

I read that the tornado was an EF2 with winds between 111 and 135 m.p.h. and did an estimated $150 million in damage. Thank God nobody in Atlanta got killed! :1_grouphug:

Answer to your question is ...

This is the first time in the downtown area of Atlanta to be hit with a tornado since
    records have been kept (1880's).

Does anyone know if Charles Stanley's church had any damage from this tornado?

Tornadoes are fairly common in Georgia. In 1975 one hit the governor's mansion. There have been several over the years that have hit the metro area. One went thru our neighbornood in 1997 or 1998 and tossed a few trees around. There was a little girl killed a couple of streets over from us. My and my kids were hiding in the closet while my hubby watched from the window.

As to Dr. Stanley's church--it wasn't hit. He is not in the downtown area anymore, so it was not in the path the storm took.

Our pastor and one of his sons were in the Georgia Dome as the tornado passed. He's pretty "even keeled," but he said the rafters/cables/etc. were swaying pretty violently. He said also that the tornado roar could be heard clearly.

My daughter was ok at Roswell, Ga. The storm went north and south of her. My granddaugter, however, was riding her horse soth of Atlanta and they were given 15 minutes to find cover. They got to a hotel and waited in lobby,,the horses were kept in their trailers in underground parking..Very frightening experience for her.

Daughter thinks the tornadoes are followiing her from Florida,,lol.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Wow, Jim, I'm glad she was OK. That could've been really bad--outside on a horse in a tornado!

Here are a couple of pics from the news:

We got lots of rain, but hardly any wind and only a little hail. We were very fortunate this time!

That storm cell (or cells) came through here last night (southwest Arkansas) with one passing about 10 miles north and the other about 5 miles south...and we dodged a big bullet apparently.
Scary how tornadoes have been hitting large cities over the last few years: Oklahoma City, Nashville and now Atlanta; pretty unusual.

Atlanta seems to get more sympathy today than it did in 1864.
