Tornado Hits Perth, Australia

    A tornado struck Perth, Australia, yesterday, ripping roofs off houses and causing widespread blackouts. Lawn furniture became missiles, causing additional damage.

    My sister, who works in Perth, stated that when the tornado hit, she thought she was in Indiana for a moment! :tongue3:

    Is it usual for tornados to happen in Perth, Australia ?
    In fact, does Australia usually have tornadoes like we do here in the States ?

    If not, gosh, then I guess I'll be watching out for news of a snowstorm in Manila, Philippines.

    We do get quite a lot of tornados in AUstralia, most are nowhere near as severe as those we hear repors of in the US.

    " Tornadoes are not uncommon in southwestern Australia. They are reported most frequently from the coastal strip south from Perth to Cape Leeuwin, and from the adjacent inland, especially in the cooler months."

    And also, Australia is far more sparsely populated then the US, so in the country areas the dammage is often only noticed by the odd kangaroo or cockie.
