TPP: With Trump out, is China in?

Trump walks away from the bargaining table and that leaves China to hammer out a multinational deal. We have no voice at that table.
-------------------------------------------------

With the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) having been dumped by new United States President Donald Trump on his first week in office, the question remains as to whether the remaining signatories will attempt to push through the deal by themselves or with China's aid -- or whether they will instead use a Chinese-led deal.

Even if the TPP does not move forward, at least half of the nations involved have said they will instead consider Chinese-led multilateral trade deals, such as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), which China is negotiating with Australia, India, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Trump might have formally withdrawn from TPP, but it was already dead in the Senate - no way would they have come up with enough votes to pass it and Obama had been a big TPP supporter.

What the other countries do without the US will probably be either a US-free version of the treaty or a bunch of little treaties between the participating countries, which so far is just Japan. But, no, they won't "turn to China", neutralizing China was the reason there ever was a TPP.

Interesting to see exactly how Trump deals with China - forget Mexico and Canada, China is in the big leagues.
