I have been in a traditional worship service,
I have been in a contemporary worship service,
What is a contemplative worship service.

I know all three are different styles.

So give me examples of what happens in contemplative services.

    Thank you.

Tim, I have no clue about a contemplative worship service. But I am betting several on here will have varying opinions [IMG] [IMG]

Your question piqued my interest so I Googled it.

    http://www.youthspecialties.com/articles/topics/spirituality/contemplative.php

    Sounds like meditation and comtemplation.
I'm not sure I could get into it but it may not be a bad thing to try if it's not New Age.

It seems to be more attuned to focusing of the Word of God rather that the theatrics of a preacher or the words in a hymnal.

I HOPE it's not New Age.

I have come across that term twice today.
Once in "Christianity Today", and once in "Youth specialties"

I am thinking it refers to times of silence and candles and such.

If what I think it is, it turns out to be, then I have done a few like this around Easter, but I didn't know what to call them.

mountainrun, I read your link, but I'm not for sure that is what I am talking about.

I am not talking about just prayer, but a service. What would the service look like?

I am somewhat skeptical of comtemplative prayer practices, because they are close to New Age.

I took my youth to a JR High convention one time and the speaker was talking about prayer, and how imagining what you are praying for is just as powerful as speaking a prayer since a picture is worth a 1000 words. He also told us to imagine a quiet place where we can meet Jesus everyday.

I still don't know what to think of him.
It sounds to New Age to me.

But what does a comtemplative service look like?

Our semi-Christian radio station plays the "three" types of music.

    Traditional = hymns
    Contemporary = hard rock "christian"
Contemplative = anything less than hard rock

Would assume that this spirit carries into the "service" in all areas.

Can you remember some of the "contemplative" song titles? I have never heard of this category in Christian Music.

Just when I think I got it all figured out. God shows me i know nothing!!!

Maybe its along the lines of old contemporary...like "As the Deer", "you are my hiding place", stuff like that.

Contemplative: "marked by or given to contemplation"

Humm, sounds like thinking or serious consideration, something that would be painful, I should think.

Bet that is even more painful than contemporary to a traditionalist like me.

    :D

"Ofcourse that would make it over 1000 years more traditional than traditional music."

    If you are Catholic.

"Contemplative music. Sounds like Gregorian chant."

What do you base your comment on, experience of such a service, a guess???? wikipedia link speaks only to define Gregorian chants.

Hmmm. Interesting... I'm contemplating if this type of service is useful.......Hmmm....

Has anyone ever been a part of this type of worship?

I assume that the "all heads bowed, no one looking around" invitation doesn't count.

I have... if it's what I'm thinking about. Of course, no one starts by saying, "Today, we'll be having a contemplative service." ;)

The service I was in was very disturbing. Candles everywhere, and some chantlike readings. The sermon was simple (not altogether a bad thing) but very shallow.

This was at a Baptist Church in Texas. The only service like it that I've been to. Don't know if it helps or not.

Yeah, that's what I am talking about..
I have never been to one, I just wondered what drew people to it, and what it was like.

I wasn't for sure what one was like.

I have done some services were we have a Quiet time after the sermon, or drama with quiet music, Michael W Smith, etc. playing in the background.

While Teens came forward for prayer.

I wasn't sure if this was it or not, I guess it isn't.

    What disturbed you the most?

I believe it is a mix of conservative and semi Pentecostal. Which is rare. This is mostly found in a non denominational church, where you won't get evil looks from others in the church if you raise your hands in praise to God.

Originally I wanted to say older but traditional sounded so much more traditional. [IMG]
Traditional American Evangelical hymns just haven't been around all that long.
And you guess wrong. It's merely an association thing.
The most famous Gregorian choirs are made up out of monks who belong to contemplative orders.

Not a guess at all, I was founding it on your source: "which was developed in the Catholic church"

Contemporary Christian music is hard rock? That's a new one. Contemporary Christian music is typically mainstream pop in nature, and maintream pop Christian music has remained somewhat the same as a genre for the past 15 or so years.

Although, There are Hard rock Christian songs in the genre of CCM, that is just one group of styles that fall under the CCM umbrella.

I'm not sure what Dr Bob meant by "anything less than hard rock" I'm not for sure if he meant P&W and such.

That is why I asked for examples of songs.

To summarize so far, a contemplative service would include candles, gregorian style music, meditation, contemplative prayer (whatever that is) and a shallow sermon. Am I right?

What would be the benefit to such a service?

What type (flavor) of Christian (be nice here) would enjoy that type of service?

    I am curious?
