Tragedy of Armenian Christians

The ancient kingdom of Armenia was the first nation to embrace Christianity — in AD 301. Modern Armenia, formerly a Soviet republic, declared autonomy in September 1991 and today exists as a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States. There you find many of the oldest churches in the world, and a people who have upheld the faith for nearly 1,700 years, often at great cost.

Nowhere has the cost been greater than in the little piece of ancient Armenia called Nagorno-Karabakh, cruelly cut off from the rest of Armenia by Stalin in 1921, and isolated today as a Christian enclave within Islamic Azerbaijan. Only 100 miles north to south, 50 miles east to west, there are mountains, forests, fertile valleys, and an abundance of ancient churches, monasteries, and beautifully carved stone crosses dating from the fourth century.

This paradise became hell in 1991. Vying with Armenia for control of this enclave, Azerbaijan began a policy of ethnic cleansing of the Armenians of Karabakh, and 150,000 Armenians were forced to fight for the right to live in their historic homeland. It was a war against impossible odds: 7 million-strong Azerbaijan, helped by Turkey and, at one stage, several thousand mujahideen mercenaries.

On April 10, 1992, forces from Azerbaijan attacked the Armenian village of Maraghar in northeastern Karabakh. The villagers awoke at 7 a.m. to the sound of heavy shelling; then tanks rolled in, followed by infantry, followed by civilians with pick-up trucks to take home the pickings of the looting they knew would follow the eviction of the villagers.

Turkish doctor details torture of victims at publishing house

MALATYA, Turkey: Three Protestants murdered at a Christian publishing house here were tortured for three hours before their assailants slit their throats, a press report said Friday, quoting one of the doctors involved in the grisly case. Dr. Murat Ugras, a spokesman for the Turgut Ozal Medical center, told the daily Hurriyet of hospital surgeons' fruitless efforts to save Ugur Yuksel, one of the three victims of the massacre at the Zirve (summit) publishing house, which distributed Christian literature.

"He had scores of knife cuts on his thighs, his testicles, his rectum and his back," Ugras said. "His fingers were sliced to the bone. It is obvious that these wounds had been inflicted to torture him," he said.

The two others who were killed, Necati Aydin, pastor of Malatya's tiny Protestant community, and German Tilmann Geske, a Malatya resident with his wife and three children since 2003, were also tortured, press reports said.

I think the Armenian Genocide was culminated in 1915 during WWI.
Turkey is trying to bid for the membership of EU, but their human rights and the religious freedom are the main problems which can hardly meet the guideline of EU.
The cruelty of the recent attack onto the Christian bookstore shows how and what they are.

I have felt great sympathy with Armenians since I learned about their tragedy. The book " The Key of Truth" tells us the great Christianity outside the Roman Empire during 8-9c AD, which was discovered in 1895 translated by Conybeare. I guess there have been the great Christian believers during 1c-11c AD since Apostle Paul preached Galatia and Kappadokia area.

US tolerated or condoned Turkey during the Cold War though it had a lot of problems with Human Rights, Religious rights, and with Kurdish people, as it bordered with Russia. Now Turkey try to recover its great Empire territory by embracing Tajikstan etc. I think US has to change the stance on Turkey and on Armenian issue.

Our church sponsors a church planter in Armenia. He is an Armenian who has been trained in the Baptist Seminary there. The reports we get back from him and the leader of the Baptist Convention there is that revival is breaking out in many places there. Yes, they face many political and economic problems, the the Spirit of God is at work there in a powerful way.
