A man suspected of assault was shot on a north Minneapolis street by a police officer early Sunday while allegedly hindering emergency responders from aiding his victim.

The shooting ignited a chaotic scene of shouting and taunting bystanders who believed the man was handcuffed before police opened fire.

Police Chief Janeé Harteau said Sunday afternoon that her department’s preliminary information is that the man was not handcuffed when police shot him.

The confrontation began about 12:45 a.m. in the 1600 block of Plymouth Avenue N., according to police. Authorities have yet to reveal the identities of the people involved or elaborate on the exact circumstances leading up to the assault.

Nekelia Sharp, who lives across the street, said an ambulance was called after the suspect and his girlfriend got into an argument. While paramedics were taking the girlfriend away, the suspect tried to talk to her. Sharp said that’s when he was handcuffed and then shot.

Bystanders swarmed as emergency vehicles were responding. In a video posted on Facebook by a witness, one woman was repeatedly shouting, “Y’all just killed that man!” Others nearby were pointing at police and taunting them.

[According to police] Officers answered a call about an assault and were then alerted that the suspect “had returned to the area and was confronting paramedics and disrupting their ability to render aid,” a statement from police read.

Protestors interrupted a meeting at the Minneapolis Urban League where Mayor Betsy Hodges and Police Chief Jane Harteau addressed community members.

As officers were attempting to calm the suspect, an altercation erupted with the man, “who was not in handcuffs,” the statement continued.

“At some point during the struggle, an officer discharged his weapon, striking the suspect,” the statement read.

JESUS!!! Why would they need to shoot this man at all, let alone shoot him in the head? Where is TC? If officers are called to a domestic violence scene and the alleged assaulter is allegedly hindering emergency responders from aiding his victim, wouldn't the first thing officers do is restrain him?

I hope some folks took video.

Leave it to Zaac to automatically blame the police.

Leave it to police to allegedly shoot someone in the head over a domestic dispute. You seem to think someone else is guilty of killing the man. DO tell?

The information is incomplete but I will say this:

If the suspect was interfering with the paramedics that were treating the victim he should have been restrained, put in handcuffs, and thrown in the back of a police car. Why was the suspect allowed to approach HIS OWN VICTIM?

Also, unless the suspect was armed or going for a gun, there was no need to shoot him. There were plenty of cops at the scene. They should have restrained him. Why do you shoot someone for interfering with a paramedic? Is that even a crime? Nowhere in the story is there a report that the suspect was resisting arrest.

We only know 3 things for certain right now. The guy is dead. The bystanders are lying about him being restrained and with BLM involved, it will take 3 times as long to conduct the investigation because of all the lies they spread and rabble rousing they cause.

Actually, he's not dead. How do you know the eyewitnesses are lying?

How can this shooting be justified? Can't several cops subdue one man? Why shoot him?

    No. Just brain dead.

Hands up, don't shoot! They always do until the videos that inevitably surface prove them to be liars. Even then some of them don't change their tune. More of the same. There will be more lies to come. Anything BLM is involved in is laced with falsehoods...usually leading to senseless violence based on their lies.

ITL, again the killings just continue to get more stupid and the excuses made for the cops even more stupid. It just makes no sense if you and a handful of other cops are trying to subdue someone for you to just haul off and shoot the man in the head. Did he have a weapon or something that we're not hearing about but that will magically appear?

Again, I ask--Why was the suspect allowed to approach HIS OWN VICTIM?

Makes no sense. You're called to the scene for domestic violence. The EMCs are working on her. Why do you allow the guy who harmed her anywhere near her? Perhaps this is when they allegedly handcuffed him, which would make sense. But like you said, I don't understand why he was allowed to get near her again once the police were on the scene.

It's true that we don't know much, but we do know that the suspect in a domestic disturbance call that had harmed a woman enough to need medical attention, was allowed to walk around freely. There's no excuse for that.

So much violence in these times. Not surprising though. Jesus said it would be crazy. But tragic indeed.

Domestic violence is on the rise. It is a scary world we live it. This was tragic in so many ways. I am sure we haven't heard the last of this story. There may be a video out there but I think if there was that it would have surfaced by now. My daughter was a victim of domestic violence this past weekend. She was lucky to survive.
