What was the purpose of the Transfiguration? Is there a consensus among the conservative/evangelical scolars on what that purpose was? Any Scripture to support that consensus with?

Eric, I have had the same question!!!! It must be a hard one to answer, because I can't get nobody to take it on. I believe that is on we chalk up to "the mystery of godliness"

The Transfiguration was there--to show the disciples exactly who they had been following for the past 3 1/2 years--God in human flesh!! Everything that Jesus was on the inside--showed up on the outside!! In fact, one gospel writer says that "His raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them." (Mark 9: 3)

A fuller is one who "whitens" clothes!! We'd call him the "Ajax" man in todays world. The Jews and others would take their clothes to the neighborhood cleaner and tell the Fuller--"I want you to whiten these clothes!" And the Fuller would say something like, "Be glad to!! I've got just the thing to do it!!" And then he'd take the garment and add whitener!

What this verse in Mark 9:3 is telling me is this--If you took all of the whitener that every Fuller on earth had and whitened another person's garments with all of the whitener in the world put together--and then compared that whitened garment up against the garments of the Lord Jesus Christ--the whitened garment would appear as FILTHY RAGS compared to the righteousness of the Lord Jesus Christ!!! I believe that with all my heart!!

    Hi Eric_b...

I gave an answer to this question under the Seeker's Forum and on another forum, but I don't know how to post a link to it, so I'll just repeat it.

There definitely is a lesson to be learned from reading about the Transfiguration.

The whole point was that it was time for the disciples to get a grasp on the big picure. And to do that, they had to know just exactly who Jesus was.

They didn't come into a full knowledge of His Deity and Supreme Authority until after He was resurrected.

But this was earlier on and God knew that one very important thing needed to be crystal clear.

Jesus and Moses and Elijah are talking about Jesus' final countdown to his sacrificing His life for His people. (Luke 9:30)

Peter pipes up, butts in, and asks Jesus if he should have a tabernacle built for each of them. One for Moses, one for Elijah, and one for Jesus. Each one exalted the same. Each one honored the same. Each one no more and no less than the other. The Bible says that Peter didn't have a clue as to what he was talking about. (Luke 9:33)

And that was typical of Peter. He spoke rashly, acted rashly, and thought...well, he didn't think at all sometimes. Certainly, not here.

While he was suggesting this "brilliant" idea, God appeared on the scene in the form of a cloud and God said, "This is My beloved Son! Hear Him!"

Moses and Elijah vanished. All that was left weas Jesus.

Peter and, most likely, many other early followers of Jesus ranked Moses and Elijah on an equal plane with Jesus.

God didn't want anyone to make that mistake.

Many Bible scholars feel that Moses represented the Law and Elijah represented the Prophets. Jesus, of course, did not come to destroy the law nor the prophets, but to fulfill their purposes and their predictions.

And He could only do that if He was in authority over them as the Son of God.

There could not be three tabernacles because there were not three Messiahs. There were only two ordinary men who were used in extraordinary ways and one supernatural Son of God who created the other two men and used them for His own puposes.

Jesus could not be and cannot be ranked alongside of Moses, Elijah, or anyone else.

He, as Messiah and Lamb of God, stands alone.

That's the point of the Transfiguration.

    Peace-

    YSIC

    Hey, Eric

I can't believe--only two takers on this subject!! I love preaching on this subject everytime the Spirit allows me--just to see everything that Jesus was on the inside--show up on the outside.

I reckon that all of the other real theologians(laugh, laugh) spend much of their time on the booze thread--trying to figure out how the definition of abuse!!

    Greetings:

I believe the glory which was seen in the tranfiguration led to these beautiful words by John "we beheld his glory as of the only begotten of the father, full of grace and truth" John 1:14

It has been suggested that the transfiguration is a picture of the future kingdom. In Matt. 16:28 Jesus said "there be some standing here, which shall not taste death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. I believe that the Lord Jesus is referring to the transfiguartion which protrays his kingdom in minature.

As some have already said, this is a moment were Christ is singled out by his father "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased" Matt.17:5 His glory was such that they could not stand in his presence reminding us of that coming day when he will come in power and glory.

What beautiful words in V. 7 "He touched them and said arise, and be not afraid" This reminds of that all powerful one and yet that one who reaches down to where we are and touches us in our need and gives us peace.

I love the words of this hymn:

    "My Redeemer O what beauties,
    In thy lovely name appear
None but Jesus in his glory
    Shall the honored title wear!

    My Redeemer, My Redeemer,
    Thou hast my salvation wrought.

    Praise his precious name
    Robert
