There seems to be a growth in Chrisitan women using headcoverings. Some wear them only when they pray, others when at church, others all the time. The trend is growing through the Internet. USA Today today had an article on it. We've had this issue before, but there is fresh blood out there to spill over this! :BangHead: LOL!

Part of the issue is the translation of the word in the passage as "woman" or "wife." The ESV uses "wife" since Grudem, who was on the translation committee, believes that this is specifically about wives submitting to husbands, and married women at the time wore head coverings. He says it was cultural.

So what do you all think?

I guess one of the most interesting things to me about it is something that was alluded to in this USAToday article.
I have noticed that many women come to this conviction independent of any urging by their husband or pastor. In many cases, the woman almost has to talk her husband into it, and she often finds her pastor does not think it is Scripturally necessary. The support she gets is often from other online women, not from women she knows everyday in church or family.
Which is ironic since it is fueled partly by a desire to show submission.

I love long hair on women!

My wife covers her head with her beautiful long auburn hair--her covering, just as the Bible says it to be. I don't make her keep her hair long, she just does it because she thinks it is Biblical. Added bonus: folks almost always guess her age as much younger than it is! Her hair is her glory, just as the Bible says. Deliver me from women with shorn hair, who look no different from men from the neck up.

And by the way, Japanese women, who to me take more care to look feminine than American girls do (sorry ladies), take very good care of their hair, and many grow it long. You should see the beauty salons in every neighborhood! Women looking feminine with their long, lovely hair is not a cultural thing, it is the natural result of how God made them to be women! Viva la differance! :applause:

Hay! I'm with ya there John of Japan! I know what you mean about beutiful hair on a pretty woman. There's a girl sits in front of me at church and her hair is so long and blond and soft looking that I can't stop looking at it.

Just like God planned, amen? Of course there is just one slight drawback--I find my wife's hair in unusual places.

    Women's hair, beautiful hair,
What words of praise I utter.
But oh how sad it makes me feel
To find it in the butter!

    Hair! Hair! I hair you.

ON the craze to covering. Since it is not biblical, according to the vast majority of theologians, I just wonder if this is not a false desire toward spirituality. It is an easy thing for someone yo sound so spiritual on the internet and gain a following.

The Queen of England wears a hat all the time. She is the Queen. She does not have to show "submission"........except to God, of course.

No, it is a cultural carryover from Victorian times. As culture developed, or at least changed, hats fell off.

    Cheers,

    Jim

I know many feminine women with shorter hair. From your statement, there is no room for that. All short haired women do not look like men. Including myself. :saint:

What prompts cultural change? Why not the return of head coverings for women? I'd be happy to wear a snood instead of spending time working on current trends of hair styles and its associated costs. Not every day, but when I chose to.

Has nothing to do with legalistic compliance, I'd just like the option of wearing a hat without anyone wondering why.

From your photo, you should remember, as I do, our parents taking hats for granted. If you are much younger than your current photo appears, my apoligies in advance!!!

*smile* I am in my 80th year..Yes I remember a far different world. We always doffed our hat in presence of ladies and when we went indoors. Ladies all wore hats, including the Queen Mum.............and gentlemen did not even mention pants (ladies dainties) in public or mixed company........Oh how things have changed.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Well, I for one do not look good in hats, scarves or with anything on my head. It makes my head look flat.

For a short while as a new believer, I attended an assembly where head coverings were worn by the women. After attending a few Sundays (at the time, my sister and I could not find any church with sound doctrine and this was the best one), someone mentioned the head coverings and we knew we had to get some. We bought some kind of large white handkerchief thing.

It was weird feeling we could not go worship without putting on one of these ugly things. If I leaned over too far, it fell off. So I was having to keep my head still. Women also were not allowed to speak except to request hymn numbers (or that might have been the SS hour -can't recall now).

It was legalistic and the HS was being quenched. That's why I left. The Lord showed me this from scripture. It was a relief to leave that place.

Oops. Guess I hit a nerve. Please forgive me, and let me clarify.

If you'll look again, my statement was not about shorter hair, but shorn hair, which to me is when it is all cut off. I saw a woman on the American news the other day who looked like she had just gotten out of Marine boot camp. With hair like that, there is nothing a woman can "do with it," so she can't make it look pretty and feminine, while a woman with, say, six inches of hair can still style it.

    There...all forgiven? :praying:

Whew. Sounds almost Amish! This minor detail of a minor passage n the Bible should be an individual choice, not a church rule. :saint:

from your statement, you implied that long hair was what made a lady feminine. But, I still like ya anyway. ;) so, yes, all is forgiven. :)

Nowadays in the States you don't even dare to open the door for a woman. Our co-workers told us about a young lady relative who came home and told the family someone at work was "hitting on her." Turned out it was a polite, old-fashioned young gentleman who would open the door for the ladies!

Fortunately, here in Japan I can still be a gentleman and open the door for ladies--who then are shocked and greatly pleased because Japanese men have never been gentlemen that way.

It may be a legend, but here is an interesting story. I was told that it was not until after WW2 that the Japanese men stopped making their girls and wives walk 5 paces behind them. Why the change? A US Marine would show up and whisk the girl away before her boyfriend knew what had hit him!

Whew. I repent in dustcloth and ashes. :tonofbricks:

You have to remember and take into account and give me a little leeway, it was me own grandpa that wrote the notorious Bobbed Hair, Bossy Wives and Women Preachers. :D :p
