True Christian music is inspired by the Holy Spirit. Take the hymns, for example, 'What a Friend we have in Jesus'. A very touching, very moving hymn - truly spiritual. Take modern Christian music, for example, Vineyard music; most of such music excites the flesh. It is also possible to have famous classical music, such as Handel's Messiah, which may not be very spiritual. True Christian music comes out of a heart that has been touched and 'broken' by God. Such music is the product of consecration, and brings us in touch with heaven.

It is also possible to have Christian songs, which as sugary and sentimental, like a lot of Christmas carols, which are not at all spiritual.

Therefore genuine Christian music is spiritual, inspired by the Holy Spirit, and touching our spirits, our innermost heart.

Please give your definition of "inspired", because if you are equating "What a Friend we have in Jesus" with scripture which is inspired, I'll have to disagree with you.

BTW, I like that song too.

OTOH, I've heard many CCM songs that touch my spirit, and I believe God led them to write the song. "In me" or "Who am I" By Casting Crowns, are jsut a couple.

I said "True Christian music is inspired by the Holy Spirit". I nowhere equated the hymn with scripture that is inspired. There are many hymns inspired by the Holy Spirit, apart from 'What a Friend we have in Jesus'.

I believe there is enough literature available to prove that CCM is nothing but fleshly music. Unless the person/writer/singer is born again and led by the Holy Spirit, whatever he/she writes is definitely harmful and will never touch the spirit.

But if "True Christian music" is inspired by the Holy Spirit, and if scripture is inspired by the Holy Spirit, and if you are not equating the two, the you must be using two different definitions of 'inspired'. So, what are your two different definitions of 'inspired'?

It would help me if you would give me a list of the songs that I can listen to and a list of the songs that I should avoid.

    (bolding is mine)

So, are you saying that 100% of CCM music is fleshly music and therefore devoid of the Spirit, and 100% of the artists are not born again?

    Sure hope not,

    Mike

We have to be very careful about contemporary Christian music. It has rhythms and tunes which are not different from pop/rock music. Surely we should have an atmosphere of reverence in church?

But no one on your side has ever been able to show that the rhythms and tunes (in themselves)are necessarily antithetical to "reverence". That is just an assertion based on personal association. You're here just in time to see your leading man, Aaron go through the rounds again trying to prove his point.

Not that I'm any big defender of CCM, but what's wrong with having tunes and rhythyms similar to pop/rock music, especially since CCM is pop/rock music.

True Christian music should be "inspired" by the fellowship that we have with God and be based on the truth of God's Word.

One of the very subtle snares of Satan, the god of this world, is to use music in a kind of 'Golden Calf' worship. Check out 1 Cor 10.7: 'The people...got up to indulge in pagan revelry'[Exod 32.6]. The flesh is always opposed to the Spirit. It would seem that the authors of contemporary Christian music have no experience of the Cross, are very much in love with the 'world' and lack absolute devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ. What a huge difference between the hymns of Charles Wesley and the tawdry songs of modern CCM!

    Excuse me...
    Have you listened to CCM?
Do you know what CCM is anyway?
How are you comparing CCM with "pagan revelry" and calling it "tawdry"?

My friend, there is as many writers of CCM that have experienced the cross as there are hymn writers.

To lump all CCM artists into an ungodly category is just not right.

How do you know their hearts? Are you God?
For every one CCM artist you can prove that does not glorify God by their songs, I can name two that does.

I'll go first: "Casting Crowns", and "Ray Boltz"

Find something wrong with their songs, go ahead I dare you.

    procyon,

Could you please share with us the scriptures that tell us which "rhythms" and "tunes" are the acceptable ones for christian music and which ones are unacceptable?

    Thanks,

    Mike

A couple of problems with this.

The first is that you won't give us an example of these "tawdry" songs or tell us which of these artists you're having a problem with, which leads me to believe that you just read one of these idiotic websites that Aaron is always quoting, rather than examining the music for yourself.

The second is that you claim that these mystery artists have no "experience of the cross", but you ignore the many artists who's lyrics are straight forwardly and overtly scriptural in nature.

The third is that you say that they love the world, but you ignore that many of these people are working full time jobs to support their ministries. It wasn't until very recently in the history of CCM that the most successful artists had the option of giving themselves to it full time.

Whiteheart was one of the biggest bands of the 80's-mid 90's. Even at the height of their popularity, their members had to keep day jobs and play on the weekends.

There's plenty about CCM to criticize, but let's criticize it fairly.

((By the way, you still haven't answered my questions))

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Procyon to answer your questions. I have visited many threads that he has started, and in every one of them that I've visited, there are valid questions that are asked of him, but never answered.

Procyon, you should understand that if you continue down this path of making ridiculous claims and never answering valid questions about those claims, you're going to start being thought of as little more than a troll.

I'm sure. It's been my experience dealing with these folks here and on various other message boards is that when they're challenged, one of two things will happen:

Either they'll make all sorts of personal attacks or they'll cite irrelevant verses of scripture out of context (or, in Aaron's case, both).

Please do not make wild accusations. I raised a legitimate question, a legitimate concern. Certainly there is a difference between the glorious hymns of Wesley, Crosby, etc. and the strange music we hear today. True music is inspired by the Holy Spirit. Man, however skillful and talented he may be, cannot create uplifting hymns that bring in an atmosphere of reverence; only the Holy Spirit can do that. Spiritual songs will inspire spiritual worship.

You mean like saying that you have "no experience of the cross" or that you "lack devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ"?

You raised a legitimate question and a legitimate concern. The problem is that you did it in such a way as to needlessly attack brothers and sisters in Christ and in a way that is more rumor mongering that Christ honoring.

You make accusations against others, but you refuse to back them up.

You expect that we take your word for it, but you refuse to answer our questions.

It's difficult to take you seriously when you behave that way.

The problem here is that you won't tell us how you determine what music is "inspired by the Holy Spirit" or what constitutes a "spiritual song".

You're kidding about that, right? Messiah is intensely spiritual.
