WASHINGTON (AP) — In a surprise announcement that could compromise a major trade deal, President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he is slapping a 5% tariff on all Mexican imports to pressure the country to do more to crack down on the surge of Central American migrants trying to cross the border.

He said the percentage will gradually increase “until the Illegal Immigration problem is remedied.”
...
the 5% figure will increase to 10% on July 1, to 15% on Aug. 1, to 20% on Sept. 1 and to 25% on Oct. 1.

'Tariffs will permanently remain at the 25 percent level unless and until Mexico substantially stops the illegal inflow of aliens coming through its territory,'

It looks like everyone is made about it. But it was completely avoidable. Trump is taking this measure because Congress has refused to lift a finger to change the laws on the border and stop illegals from flooding over the border.

The Democrats went from refusing to admit there was a crisis, to blaming the crisis on Trump, when it was THEIR responsibility to affect better border security and change the laws on the border. They are trying to blame Trump for conditions that they are constitutionally tasked with remedying.

Yes, Trump isn't afraid of anyone, much less Congress. They are the problem and he knows that we know that. It's refreshing to have a president that doesn't cower to Congress. They are not used to someone with backbone.

Then why hasn't he declared "Martial Law on the southern border area from Texas to California because of this this unprecedented invasion of our nation? We need troops there who will physically prevent any of these people from crossing the border. I support President Trump, but he should take more decisive action that will actually stop people from crossing over.

If he declared Martial Law (and I agree totally with you that we need it), a judge would simply block it, like they always do. I would not be surprised if they don't find a judge to block the tariffs he wants to impose now.
