"[In response to the question, "Do you feel like a Marine?" on Major Dad (1989) during an on set 1992 interview by the Department of the Navy's, "Navy News This Week"] Beverly Archer - who portrayed Gunny Bricker on Major Dad, stated "I do not claim the privilege."

And what a voice! Here is Gomer's interpretation of a classic Peter Paul & Mary folk song:

Don't know how long I watched his various characters before I heard him actually sing, BUT, when I did I was COMPLETELY blown away. Never remotely associated a beautiful voice with the "Gomer" character!!
    Very pleasantly surprised!!

The first time I heard him sing was in an episode of Andy Griffin called The Song Festers where he sang Santa Lucia... Brother Glen:)

This may be off topic, but for an actor with surprising musical talent, Steve Martin playing the banjo blew me away.

Odd thing is that as nice as they seemed on TV, Nabors and Griffith were both first class jerks in person.

You also wouldn't think he was queer from watching him on The Andy Griffith Show.

My most memorable military character on tv was Ernie Yost in the NCIS episode Call of Silence. In the movies, it's a tossup between the platoon in Battleground and Kelley's crew in Kelly's Heroes. Yeah, the last one's a fantasy. But, it's an only in the US Army fantasy.

I guess Ronald Lee Ermey in "Full Metal Jacket" is my favorite.
