ALBANY, N.Y. - The federal government sued New York on Wednesday to force it to comply with a law prompted by the disputed 2000 presidential race that requires states to update their voting machines.

The lawsuit marks the first time the Justice Department has sued to enforce the election reforms. It alleges New York failed to adopt an adequate system for disabled voters and failed to create a voter registration database.

The federal government said New York has made the least progress of any state in carrying out the law's requirements. The lawsuit seeks a court order requiring the state to submit a plan for complying.

What are these new laws requirements switch over to the deeply flawed and easily manipulated Diebold and ES&S electronic voting machines?

NY has mostly the mechanical lever-type machines. I'm not sure what the problem is considered to be with such machines, BUT the physical machines seem to me the least of NY's notorious voting problems.

It is much harder to hack mechanical voting methods.

As we saw in the last election, where some precincts had more votes for Bush than total voters, strange and wonderful things can happen with electronic methods.

Not to mention the amazing changes in public opinion than can be attained by adding just one letter to one small word. From vote fraud comes vote-r fraud. Changing the whole discussion and permenently centering all the blame on the vote-rs themselves.

That is the magic of a public relations genius no doubt.
