U.S. sets conditions for talks with Iran

By ANNE GEARAN, AP Diplomatic Writer

The United States is prepared to join other nations in holding direct talks with Iran on its nuclear program if Iran first agrees to stop disputed nuclear activities that the West fears could lead to a bomb, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Wednesday.

"To underscore our commitment to a diplomatic solution and to enhance prospects for success, as soon as Iran fully and verifiably suspends its enrichment and reprocessing activities, the United States will come to the table," Rice said in remarks prepared for delivery at the State Department.

The Swiss ambassador to the United States was called to the State Department earlier Wednesday to receive a copy of Rice's remarks for transmission to Iran, U.S. officials said. The United States has had no diplomatic ties with Iran and few contacts at all with its government since Islamic radicals took over the U.S. Embassy in 1979 and held diplomats there for more than a year....

The agreement to join talks now represents a major shift in policy for the Bush administration, which has been deeply suspicious of Iran's intentions and the prime mover for tough United Nations action against the clerical regime.

    Really Nothing New

I would not get too excited over this bit of news. The story you quoted said, "The agreement to join talks now represents a major shift in policy for the Bush administration", which is actually not true.

The devil is certainly in the details here. What is the US asking Iran to do in order to have the talks?

    Your article quoted Rice,

"as soon as Iran fully and verifiably suspends its enrichment and reprocessing activities, the United States will come to the table,"

So really what is being offered is nothing new. The government is saying that if Iran gives up its weapons program then there will be one on one talks, nothing new. Why nothing new? What Dr Rice has offered, really, is this, "you give up your weapons program, then we will be willing to talk about you giving up your weapons program". So it is not a change in policy when one thinks about it carefully. It is just a different way of wording it.

I thought about that when I first read the story today. I have only heard one other person point this out, he was a guest of The Big Story w/ John Gibson on Fox News. But I did think about it first :D

That's the way it works. Demand that Iran do something that you know they will not do and then claim to have attempted to negotiate.

There has yet to be any proof that Iran has a nuclear weapons program. It would be kind of hard to give up something that doesn't exist. But that sounds like the Bush administration modus operandi - it demanded that Iraq prove that it didn't have WMDs which did not exist in March 2003.

    No

    Answer my question.

Don't try to change the subject.

The answer to your question, no.

    Martin.

I trust the regime in Washington a little more than I trust the regime in Tehran. I must admit that that is because of prejudice on my part as an American.

Apparently the benevolent dictator in Iran is not willing to talk to the US. But don't worry, Ken. They have nothing to hide...and all they want is peace on earth, good will toward all men.

I certainly hope diplomacy can resolve this standoff, Joseph. If we attack Iran and the Shiites in Iraq turn on us, then we will instantly have to fight a two front war with our troops being the middle of a Shiite sandwich.

Not so, Joseph. We kept the Soviet Union at bay for over forty years.
