Ubuntu

    Experimenting with Linux. Recently received a laptop that I can play around with, and loaded Ubuntu on it.

    At first, it didn't recognize the laptop's wireless adapter. I found a Cat-5 cable and plugged into the router; no luck with updates. A day or two later, I turned the laptop back on, and it started downloading updates. Took about an hour or so, after which it recognized the wireless adapter and even recognized several wireless networks around the neighborhood...but I couldn't make a connection.

    Unfortunately, because we're trying to move as well as sell the house, I haven't had the time to sit down and just fiddle. It's frustrating me, and when I get frustrated, I have a tendency to put it aside for a day or two. Not to mention, I need to upgrade the Content Management System software for the website I manage, but don't seem to have the time to do all the migration work necessary.

    So if anyone knows any "Ubuntu shortcut" websites for quick reference/quick reading, please let me know.

    (BTW: latest version of Ubuntu, 9.10)

    And, of course, I just connected to a public wireless connection. Must be something to do with my wireless security settings on the home network....

    Suggestion: Call your network tech support or billing and let them know you are having problems connecting to network and they'll probably plug you into tech support with no added charges (they want to keep your business).

    Let tech support know that you have a Linux/umbuntu operating system (OS for short) and need a 'tech' who's familiar with that system. They'll help you with connection. (I had a problem connecting to my DSL after I traded win's Vista basic for a computer with ubuntu/linux. Fortunate for me, the tech had a home computer with linux ubuntu OS and talked me right through the connection. I had to tell her to go slow, one step at a time, lol, and let me affirm each one as completed before leading to the next.... and actually this went smoother and faster than any previous tech support required with Windows.)

    I have Firefox and Opera as browsers. I really like Opera. It's opening page allows me to set up to 9 favorite pages which I can quick mouse click and pull up. When I shut down my computer.... I don't have to close tabs or bookmark pages which I'm unfinished with but don't wish to return to for more than a day or two. I leave them open and shut down my computer: Then, when I fire up my computer and open my browser.... it offers me the choice of resuming where I left off in a previous session. I don't ever recall this convenient feature in a windows program.
