UGH - It's our CCLI copy report time. Can it be any more confusing??

I've been in our church's praise band for about 3 years and always wondered about that kind of stuff.

I assume the report contains all the songs that have been played so that the copyright holders and publishers can get their royalties.

I've often wondered, too, if it costs us a few cents more if we put some of the recorded tracks in a loop, such as the horn section.

It's nice to just show up for rehearsal and the services and thump away on my bass and not need to worry about stuff like that, but I'm sure there's some lucky person on our church staff who handles all that stuff.

That's one time when having a small church with one worship service a week is kind of nice.

With all the wonders of technology there should be a way to keep needed records as the year progresses. Of course, waiting till the last minute to get all these records together does make it more interesting and not as boring. I suggest that you contact someone who is proficient with computer programs and record keeping, maybe they could be of service. Be careful of those who claim to know a lot because they know someone or they are always on the computer. I find they know just enough to be dangerous, I used to be like that, now I know so little about the applications that I am of no danger what-so-ever. :tongue3:

Seriously!! But you still have to report anything you use in Sunday School, small home groups, youth group, etc. LOL

    **covering my ears** LALALALALALALALALALALA!!!!!!!!

    ;)

I don't have to go back in the year but just for the copy report period of October 1st to March 31st. Fortunately my computer guy is my husband who really knows a lot but unfortunately, our entry is only as good as the data we get and I'm just hoping we get some good data!! :)

The biggest issue is how confusing it is. We don't just go by how many times we used a song but how many "masters" we made including putting a new song in the software program, how many "masters" we have created for printing words (in a bulletin, large print song sheets for visually impaired, worship team chord sheets/song lyrics/music, songbooks, etc.) and that sort of thing. It's only when a new master is produced but understanding what the master is makes it interesting! It has nothing to do with how often a song is sung or if we have 100 copies printed. OH - any recording of live stuff also counts.

    Fun stuff.

AMEN! Salty, this is definitely one of those times when it is most beneficial to simply use a hymnal. Although we pay each year for CCLI, we rarely, if ever, use it.

Thats grand, but it means you can never make any copies or use any other copyrighted materials unless you buy them specifically. The licence is very cheap for a small church. It cost less than twenty hymnals in most cases and you are entitled to use many thousands of songs.

We went through that last year. How often do they do this? The only reason I know is because our deaf church (meaning ME - LOL) had to track all the music for 5-6 months and report it to the person who kept the overall records.

As a license holder, you are required to do it every 2.5 years. Fun stuff! LOL

    It's that time again.

OY!!! I just got the e-mail from my boss.

Pray for me. This was NOT easy last time!!! We have too many ministries wanting to sing. I wonder if I can get them to read poetry instead. ;)

BTW, you realize, of course, that's 4 AM to 1PM your time, right?

Can I have THEM explain everything to our staff? It's confusing enough to me and I have to get a bunch of ministries to report to me!

Sure. Put 'em on speakerphone. And just to be sure you have plenty of time, schedule the call for 4 AM.

    Ann,

I've been reporting our churches CCLI for about 7 years, and would be glad to answer any specific questions.

    Just for FYI,

-If a small group re-uses a printed song booklet, you don't need to report it more than once.

-If the songs are projected, you don't need to report everytime you use a song with slides, just when you create the slides for a new song.

Those I understand but if I change a song in my computer, that becomes a new "master" and needs to be reported. So if my worship leader decides to add in the chorus to Jesus Paid It All into a song, I need to report both of those now.

The ladies in the office type up song sheets for the visually impared (large print) and it seems that they copy and paste the songs into the format for the song sheets and from my understanding (I actually called them about this for clarification), that means it's a new master and must be reported.

Then there is the youth. I have NO idea what they do! LOL

Finally, we have small groups, some of which have song sheets to do a worship song or two. The small group leader prints them up themselves at work or at home. I need to report those but don't usually know about them even though I've asked them to notify me when they do that.

Oh well. I will do the best with what I have and that's all I can do. :) It's just SO cumbersome in a larger church (and we're not even that big, running about 600-700 a week at three campuses). Trying to get everyone to report their useage to me. OY!! I think I'm going to move up to ProPresenter 5 finally (we didn't want to pay for the upgrade until it was necessary) because it will do the CCLI reports for me automatically. That will make my job SO much easier!

Songs like "Jesus paid it all" are old enough they automatically fall into the general open license and do not need to be reported any longer. All of the older hymns fall under that.

That's right - I haven't started reporting it yet but you're correct. Public domain don't need to be reported but I still have to report the other song as a new "master" since it was changed from it's original format.

I do not understand what that means. I am not aware of the need for any "master" song.
