Coalition strikes on Libyan military targets continued for a third night Monday, as the Pentagon sounded an upbeat note on the success of the mission so far, though it still may not be enough for rebels to gain the upper hand against Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi.

I thought the reason for the shelling and the no-fly zone and all that jazz from the UN and the US is to protect civilians ? The headline seems to suggest it was to aid rebels (are they civilians) in toppling the ruling and internationally recognized leader.

Besides, in a conflict like this where the rebels are "embedded" into the civilian population, how do you "protect civilians" without necessarily aiding a revolt ?

were rebels leading a revolt. They probably had no coalitions to help the cause save the French. We had adversity with the Crown again in 1812.

We have spent a lot of blood and "social security" defending our constitution.

Knee-jerk, gunboat, diplomacy notwithstanding, we should have done something about Moamar long before lately. We seem to have little discernment picking among benevolent dictators(an oxymoron).

We're not "protecting" anyone. we're protecting our allied pilots and aiding the rebels. And nobody knows who that is.

The "protecting civilians" mantra is political cover for Obama's illegal military operations.

and therein lies the rub.
what hypocrisy.
we're toppling down a longtime recognized leader of a sovereign country (doesn't matter how he got to the throne, he was "legitimized" by the foreign countries he dealt with, and that includes the US), and granting legitimacy to groups that want that leadership out by aiding them in their rebellion in the guise of protecting our troops.
and as usual, it is the faceless "Libyan people" who is the excuse.

But the tragic turn in the news is that Libyan authorities says while capturing and killing some rebels they have found some of them were Al Qaeda operatives, both domestic and international fighters, newly recruited and experienced.

Al Jazeera quoted Libyan Deputy Foreign Minister as, "what you can tell from the way they [captured rebels] dress – the beard, the turban, the trousers – for us [Libyan Government] it’s clear, they are really part of al-Qaeda. Some of them I’m sure are not al-Qaeda members. But the core of these attacks are the al-Qaeda elements."

I took it to mean the thread author just made a mistake and should ask a moderator to correct it. It's abundantly clear this thread is about Libya.

That is a problem. Supposing Gaddafi is ousted, with U.S. help. There will be a power vaccum. Who will step into it?

This is a bit different than Egypt, where the U.S. (publicly) kept out of the action. Here we are engaging one side of the civil war with weaponry to the benefit of the other and we don't know who will replace Gaddafi.

Thje resolution is nothing but a hypocritical resolution.

If the UN, NATO, France, Britain, and the US care about life, we'd have imposed a no-fly zone in the Sudan and protected the innocent citizens in and around Darfur. :tear:

They are protecting another OIL supplier, and that is all this is about! :tear:
