Dozens of police break up brawl at NC church

FLETCHER, N.C. Authorities say a dispute over leadership at a church in western North Carolina turned from angry words to fist fights.

About 30 police officers from five agencies were called to break up fights Sunday at Greater New Zion Baptist Church in Fletcher, about 94 miles west of Charlotte.

Henderson County Sheriff's Capt. Jerry Rice says the brawl is under investigation and no one appears to have been seriously hurt.

Rice says there were about 75 people at the church when police arrived, but not all of them were scuffling.

Church members are divided over the recent ouster of the Rev. LeVonia Ray as pastor of the church. The fighting apparently began over whether a vote should be held to reinstate him
.

No charges have been filed.

I really hate to say this but her goes. By looking at some of the threads here I beleve that if some of the members of this board could get to others the same thing might happen.

We had a similar issue in my first church after salvation... To say they were a contentious band would be putting it mildly. God chose to close that church shortly after we departed. I am actually thankful in that case, for they were daily blaspheming the name of the Lord who gave them life.

I think so too. In fact, there have threats made.

I was told about a church that split over an argument about what color the new carpet would be. Half of the people left and started their own church where they could have the color they wanted.

At another church where I was a member, there was a lot of arguing, meetings, and name-calling because of the pastor and deacons filling in windows on the back of the church building. Several people left and then sent letters to several members saying the pastor and deacons had misappropriated funds. There were so many times that instead of church services they had meetings about the people who left and what they saying and doing. After one of those meetings on a Sunday evening and another one the following Wednesday evening, I left and never went back. I wasn't there to hear people gripe about one another and what I considered a petty problem.

Congregational or elder led church?

You must have missed the presbyterial punch-up in Korea last month?

Presbyterian Pastors Attack Colleague
According to the police, the two suspects, only identified by their surnames, Choi and Cho, assaulted the 63-year-old head pastor on Sunday, breaking the bone around his left eye and inflicting other minor injuries. Kim has been hospitalized.

The two suspects were caught at the scene by the police and later also hospitalized as they complained of the injuries they got from the fight.

But they denied the physical assault against Kim, only admitting that they engaged in a brawl and pushed him on the floor.

The church has been also in the spotlight as President Lee served as an elder before he won the presidential election in 2008.

We actually had one poster threaten two us with violence. Nothing was done, however, so I believe you are correct in your assessment.

I feel sorry for the community. What kind of testimony is this church giving the unsaved in their town? Wow!

You must have also missed this Reformed Church dust-up, complete with ear-splitting vuvuzela honking:

http://news.za.msn.com/article.aspx?cp-documentid=156130424

Six police vehicles and the dog unit were sent to a Wellington church to break up a fight involving angry parishioners who sang hymns at the top of their voices to drown out their minister's sermon.

...the hymn-singing, and vuvuzela and whistle-blowing dissidents.

And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables.

Violence does not always equal "knuckle dragging neanderthals".
