Psalm 4:3 (NKJV) But know that the LORD has set apart * for Himself him who is godly;
The LORD will hear when I call to Him.
_______________
* Footnote: Some witnesses read "made wonderfully."

The NASB also footnotes the translation choice of "set apart" with: "dealt wonderfully with."

The issue is that some claim this verse supports the contention that God chose and set apart within Christ specific individuals before creation.

However another view of the intended meaning of this verse is found in the NET rendering:
Psalm 4:3 (NET)
Realize that the LORD shows the godly special favor; the LORD responds when I cry out to him.

Here the translator takes the cue from the context and addresses the idea that God makes a distinction with godly people, in that He is responsive to their prayers.

So once again, an ambiguous verse, perhaps poorly translated, is used as claimed support for questionable doctrine.
