    State of the Unions
Should you pay for someone else's opinions? A teachers union think so.

    BY STEPHEN MOORE
    Thursday, December 7, 2006 12:01 a.m. EST

    EXCERPT

SPOKANE, Wash.--Teachers unions are supposed to promote the financial interests of, well, teachers--but not in Washington state. Here, the Washington Education Association is fighting some 4,000 nonmember teachers who don't want their paychecks raided each year and used for political activities that they don't believe in. "The right of free speech is being trampled" by the union political spending, complains Scott Carlson, a business teacher in Spokane. "And that's a right I hold very precious."

Too bad the unions don't. The WEA derisively refers to teachers like Mr. Carlson who want their money back not as free-speech advocates but "dissidents." The goal is to squash these dissidents by overturning Initiative 134, a law--approved by 72% of Washington voters in 1992--that requires unions to obtain written approval from teachers before dues are spent on campaigns or candidates. Back in March, the unions got a surprising assist from the state Supreme Court, which ruled that the paycheck protection law places "too heavy" a burden on the free-speech rights of the union.

The case has now been bumped up to the U.S. Supreme Court, which will hear oral arguments in January--in what could be the most important First Amendment decision in years.

It is a shame that liberals belive it is ok to support a liberal agenda but not a conservative agenda.

Why don't we start a national teachers union and garnish wages to support you and me for president and vice president of our conservative retirement program . . .

To forcefully take ones money and use it in a way they object to should be unconstitutional. To take a non members money, at all, is criminal. IMHO

Do you believe they should have the right to take your money when you are not a member?

    BTW
Terry , do you ever contribute anything meaningful to any of these discussions?:(

I'm with you Bro. Unions began by representing people. Now they are a business the represent themselves. I'm not saying unions should be disbanded but tell me what the problem is with having a vote so the unions monitary donations and agenda is that of the majority of it's members? The only union leader who would fear or object to that would be one with his own agenda.

It's like having a president leading your country that didn't get the majority vote...

Many companies do this to. My former employer made it well known that you were expected to contribute to their PAC fund.

Albert Gore Jr. Joseph Lieberman Democratic 51,003,926 48.27%

George W. Bush Richard Cheney Republican 62,040,610 50.73%
John Kerry John Edwards Democratic 59,028,439 48.27%

I think all PAC's should be abolished. Unfortunately, the Republican majority for the last six years didn't agree. Hopefully, the Democrats can do a better job.

You wouldn't get fired but might not get as good a performance review. Of course nobody ever said that it was because you didn't contribute to the PAC.

    Sounds like coercion to me.

    It should be illegal.

I agree, but rue the fact that a State Supreme Court would rule against an individual's rights to free speach, and for a Union. I guess San Francisco and Miami/Dade don't have the exclusive corner on unconstitutional findings.
