Because I was on the job Sunday, I attended an Assembly of God church with my workplace.

I was amazed that the pastor/preacher picked a verse OUT OF CONTEXT and preached on being filled with the spirit by way of tongues.

Why do preachers go out of context? And on top of that, he missed the point of the whole passage of scripture and would have served the congregation, in my opinion, better, if he had preached on the whole passage.

What kind of churches are we going to now days.

Sadly it's just the way those places operate. Whether your kick is "tounges", "slain in the spirit", "toronto", "blab it and grab it" or whatever, then just do a Rubik's Cube effort with the Bible to support it.

Going back a bit I turned the idiot box on for a while before I went to bed. Ken Copeland was on and mentioned something somewhere around 1 Corinthians 11:23-26. I listened to it for about half a minute, and he added something like "...and because of this you can be rich.." *CLICK* *OFF*

I believe "speaking in tongues" is still a valid gift of God -- when HE chooses. The point should always be to miraculously provide a witness to someone IN THEIR HOME LANGUAGE, not some "angelic" language.

I also believe that most modern exhibitions of this gift are false. They do not follow the guidelines provided in 1 Corinthians 14, and they glorify an individual or group rather than God.

I have heard close friends speak in tongues, and have heard "interpretations" that could not be confirmed. I have also heard of missionaries on furlough hearing a congregation speak curses of God, when they thought they were praying to Him! All because they violated God's rules in the speaking of tongues!

BTW, I have NOT been given this gift. My gifts are those used as a teacher. I can "interpret" biblical passages so that grade-schoolers can better understand them.

It's not just the Charismatics who pull verses out of context. We Baptists do it ALL the time as well. Even in your most conservative and lithurgical of churches, you run into that problem. The Pentecostals do it with tongues, Baptists do it with drinking, General Baptists do it with falling away from salvation. We're all guilty of pulling things out of context to make our point.

Plus, who are we to say that tongues have ceased? The Bible doesn't explicitly say that it has. *shrugs* Just some thoughts...

A LOT of Baptists pull things WAY out of context on "tithing" too....and thereby put many back in bondage for the sake of a dollar...JMO

    Tee Hee, Soulman!

Seriously, I went to a carismatic church
but it was over 30 years ago (half a life
time ago, in the early 1970s).
The preacher read a verse, said "God has shown
me three things about this scripture". Then
he preached a good three point sermon
with alliterating point titles. I really thought
that God had given him that sermon to preach
just to me cause i needed it right then. Then we
had a time of invitation and most everybody
went forward and raised up their hands and
paraised the Lord. Then after everybody got
back into their seat the preacher's wife
began to talk in tongues. The preacher
interperted. God had given her the same three
alliterating points that God had given the
preacher. Sorry, didn't validate anything for
me -- remember, i just said, before the
talking in tongues: "I really thought
that God had given him that sermon to preach
just to me cause i needed it right then."

Speaking in tongues or hearing in their native tongue?

Scripture says the unbelievers heard the speaker in the tongue of the hearer--that was the miracle-ethnically diversifed people were HEARING the gospel in their native tongues--the gift was in the ears not the tongue.

"Speaking in other tongues" is a separate issue, in a sense, but not really. This whole "tongues" issue is mostly carnal--having nothing to do with that which is spiritual.

All this modern-day jibber-jabber, mambo-jambo is not "heard" nor understood by any known ethnic group. Whence cometh such nonsense?

    Selah,

    Bro. James

I agree that the Holy Spirit has not ceased to bestow the gife of tongues, but He HAS cut back considerably. In Paul's day, he & other believers were often preaching to people who'd never heard of God at all, so He provided them with proofs to show they weren't just another set of hucksters. Today, there are very few people who've not heard of God, and since He wants us to believe by faith, He has greatly reduced the amount of miracles He performs, and this includes tongues.

The doctrine that one must speak in tongues in order to be saved is pure heresy.

You know what crosses my mind is,if we say we are speaking in "tongues" and are not ,will we be held responsible? If we tell others they cannot be filled with the "Spirit" without speaking in tongues when this is not the case, will we also not be held responsible for that also? How are those who speak in tongues for show going to explain that to God?
I have never spoken in tongues "glossallia",the heavenly language,I think I can wait until I get to heaven before I speak a heavenly language.I used to speak Italian ,Mandarin,& Korean passably well, does that count?Of course I have'nt practiced for some time so I'm afraid it's a use it or lose it situation.
Anyhow I suppose what I'm trying to say is to me I would be afraid to stand before God Almighty and explain why I mocked Him if I truly did not speak in tongues in a Biblical manner.
