Urim and Thummim

Exodus 28:30 And thou shalt put in the breastplate of judgment the Urim and the Thummim; and they shall be upon Aaron's heart, when he goeth in before the LORD: and Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel upon his heart before the LORD continually (KJV).

As far as I can tell, the Bible does not make clear the exact method by which guidance and judgements were given by the Urim and the Thummim. I believe this is a type of the Holy Spirit, but always wondered how this piece of the high priest's garment actually worked.

Some have speculated that they would flash to give direction.

What are your thoughts?
