The Army is revising its retention policy. The new standards are as follows:

Staff sergeant limits go from 23 to 20 years.
Promotable sergeant, from 20 to 15 years.
Sergeant, from 15 to 13 years.
Promotable corporal or specialist, from 15 to 12 years.
Corporal or specialist, from 10 to eight years.
Private, from eight to five years

    As a comparison:
A private is the general worker
A corporal is an assistant manage
A Sergeant is a junior manager
A Staff Sgt is a manager

I contend that a solider should be allowed to stay in the Army as long as he wants regardless of promotion.

For example a truck driver - once he gets promoted to Staff Sgt, he no longer drives trucks - he normally only supervisors truck drivers.

Some people are better followers than leaders.

So, what say you, should we promote people, just so they can stay in the Army (and other services)?

You don't have to promote them to keep them in the Army. That's the "out" part of the policy. If you don't have the skills to advance, "Time's up. Thank you for your service."

The Army is not a jobs program, and it is not worth having people serve in low-ranking jobs for 20 years to cash a retirement check in perpetuity.

If someone doesn't have the capacity to lead, then they can serve their period of enlistment then transition to the civilian world.

Who should be cut first if we ever stop starting wars?

Why the Army and not a unionized job? How about teachers?

What does having a war (or ending) have to do with cutting troops? We need to maintain a force at all times, epically in peace time.
