"During World War II, the United States government suspended due process,

rounded up more than 110,000 Japanese resident aliens and American citizens of Japanese descent,

and banished them to prison camps in desert wastelands.

They were not charged with any crime, except, of course, being Japanese."

Only What We Could Carry: The Japanese American Internment Experience Edited with an Introduction by Lawson Fusao Inada

Quote from the Preface, page xi, by Patricia Wakida

Yes it happened here in the USA.

The Constitution was suspended for US citizens.

War fever had been drummed up by politicians and the press.

The Japanese had attacked and Japanese were easy to identify.

Pain, suffering, families broken up, property confiscated.

    Could not happen again.

It could very well happen at some point with Christians. There have been claims that to preach God's Word is "hate speech" and to teach our children the gospel "child abuse".

I do not see such camps coming but at the same time I would not be surprised.

Persecutions will come in one form or another.

As I understand the situation, no guards shot any internees. The only (former) internees who got shot were those in the 442 Regimental Combat Team by the Germans.

    Newp. Just helping out.

"On July 27, 1942, during a night march, two Japanese Americans, Toshio Kobata and Hirota Isomura, were shot and killed by a sentry who claimed they were attempting to escape. Japanese Americans testified later that the two elderly men were disabled and had been struggling during the march to Lordsburg. The sentry was found not guilty by the army court martial board."

"Anyone who was at least 1/16th Japanese was evacuated, including 17,000 children under age 10, as well as several thousand elderly and disabled residents."

"In Portland, Oregon, 3,000 people stayed in the livestock pavilion of the Pacific International Livestock Exposition Facilities."

    Japanese Internment Camps

But it was a five star pavilion.

Euphemisms were plentiful in those days but of course it's just sweetening the punch.

I live almost next door to the site of the Tanforan Race Track. Tanforan was the site of a collection center for internees from San Francisco and San Mateo County.

    That's wonderful.

Hope your place is nice and you can relax after a hard day at the forum.

Is there a plaque, monument, or do they give tours about how they so well treated 1/16 Japanese Americans?

Oh well, just one of the many by-products of war.

No comment about the murder of the two disabled elderly Japanese men in the Camp?

The sentry was found not guilty.

I suppose there were no Japanese on the jury.

    Were my comments offensive again?

I haven't shopped there for a while. The race track was torn down and a shopping mall was built on the site. IIRC, there is a plaque memorializing the transit center. As for the sentry, two murdered internees while regrettable pales in comparison to those lost in the Shoah and the invasion of China.

It was a violation and a wash-over by the authorities for the murder of two old Slant-eyed Nips.

Like so many wash-overs everywhere in the world.

We were not comparing it to anything that happened elsewhere.

This is the in the USA.

If it pales, their families were certainly affected.

But they were yellow skinned so you could not see the blood drain from their faces.

It did happen and it happened here.
