US Peacekeepers May Be Sent To Israel

Wed Jun 18 2003 12:29:50 ET

White House chief of staff Andrew Card yesterday said 'it is too early' to rule out the use of U.S. troops as peacekeepers in Israel and a future Palestinian state, the Manchester Union Leader reported on Wednesday.

Card was in New Hampshire yesterday to speak to Republican activists and to receive a distinguished citizens award from the Daniel Webster Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Card's remarks come as Israeli and Palestinian leaders try to rescue President Bush's road map to peace from a deadly week last week. On Sunday, Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., said American participation in a peacekeeping force is possible.

'I don't want to prejudge as to what kind of a solution will be best,' Card said when asked about Lugar's remarks. The administration, he said, is committed to the peace process. 'It's too early to say,' he said when pressed if the administration has ruled out U.S. troops as peacekeepers. 'You have to let the process work, you have to get to a situation where there's a climate of security without attack so the partners can truly negotiate.'

Bad idea. Israel doesn't need our troops there anyway. Israel just needs the US to keep our hands off & let Israel do what needs to be done!

The US gives Egypt military arms who in turn smuggles arms to the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and they turn around & use them on Israel and NOW possibly our own US troops?

Can somebody tell me or the Bush Administration (aka State Department / Defense Department) what is wrong with this picture? I'm starting to feel like I live in la-la land, not America. :(

If Israel is unable to defend themselves properly, I wouldn't have a promlem with us having a peacekeeping force there. However, before that happens, Israel needs to attempt to solve their own problems as best they can. Us going in right now would be a bad idea politically.

Well, John, don't you agree it is insane for our own troops to be fired upon by our own weapons we gave to another country? It was bad enough in Iraq finding weapons being used against our troops from other countries who were supposed to be our "friends."

I'm just curious how many countries around the world the US gives weapons & military technology to. There seems to be a lot of stuff going on the American people don't know about.

There is so much madness going on it boggles the mind. :(

Of course I do.

No arguement here. But I think that also shows that we don't tell countries what to do like some in the world accuse us of doing (ie, we'll give you weapons, but you can't send them to so & so).

While weapons esales to other countries is not necessarily forefront commmon knowlege, it's generally not classified info.

Aye, but let's not forget that our fighting folks are the best trained and best equipped in the world, and so long as we don't abuse that privilege, we'll be okay on the long run.
