US trade deficit with China grows to a record and it's likely even worse than the data shows

  • China's trade surplus with the U.S. — closely watched amid a bitter trade dispute between the two countries — grew 17 percent from a year ago to hit $323.32 billion in 2018.
  • According to Reuters, that's the highest on record dating back to 2006.
  • Exports to the U.S. rose 11.3 percent on-year in 2018, while imports from the U.S. to China rose 0.7 percent over the same period.
This is the impact of Trump's trade war. We lose.

Trump Might Win His Trade War with China
He was willing, where others wouldn't, to upset the gravy train. Tough talk backed by tough action can get results. Elites take note.

That’s all the tariffs were ever meant to do — serve as the stick that would push China to the bargaining table. Trump had to be willing to follow through if that tactic failed, and for the better part of a year he held firm. But in Argentina last month, the Chinese, faced with data showing that their economy was slowing down as ours roared ahead, asked for a truce. Trump accepted, and that’s where we stand.

This should serve as a wake-up call to business leaders, economists and politicians. Tough talk backed by tough action can get results.

We will win by being tough with China, for they realize that they must come to the table in order to avoid being shut out of doing business here as much as they are now!

And if Trump did not get though with them, would be even worse!

The OP is a little deceptive because the figure for 2018 doesn't take into account that most of the tariffs didn't even take effect until late last September:

US and China exchange new trade war blows as latest round of tariffs takes effect

if you look at the trade deficit from Jan.- Sept. 2018, it was:

For January-September, China's trade surplus with the United States was $225.79 billion, compared with about $196.01 billion in the same period last year, Reuters calculations showed

What trade war? China racks up a record $34.13 billion surplus on the USA

so, that means in Oct - Dec, the trade deficit was 78.53B - now, I realize there's almost a week out of these number, but multiplying 78.53 by 4 would be around 316 B - that would be a reduction from last year. But this is macroeconomics, there's gadzillions of variables involved, but we'll find out soon enough.

Trade with China was better under Obama. As I've said here before nobody wins a trade war. Our farmers are hurting the most right now. Auto makers significantly rely on exports to China. I do agree that we had to do something about China stealing our intellectual property (patents). But a trade war was not the way to do it. I think we can have a hand in hurting China's economy probably the major part. But what Trump doesn't understand is how much the world is interconnected. If China goes down, we and the rest of the world goes down.

The result was exports from the U.S. to China went down and imports from China went up relatively speaking. How do you call this a win for the U.S.?

that is why in the long run, we will win again, as its time to stop being pansies!

At some point we will go to war with China and all this trade deficit talk will become moot anyway. It will be either their invasion of Taiwan or their claim of sovereignty over the South China Sea that will be the spark. China hasn't built up their armed forces to be parade soldiers, at some point they will use them and we will have to respond.
