wow...the Sox winning the series is #1?????

Must be a homer writing it.

I admired Arthur Ashe...and I felt for him...but no way his story should be in the top 25. Politics IMO. Brandi Chastain's goal should not be in this list. It was a "pop culture" moment that quickly faded.

Some notable omissions, in no particular order:
    • Kerri Strugg's courageous vault in the 2000 olympics...it captured the audience.
    • The epic battles in the 1980's between the Lakers and the Celtics.
    • The utter dominance of the 1985 Chicago Bears...and the whole team's love of the limelight ("Super Bowl Shuffle," anyone?)
    • Jerry Rice's obliteration of the record books for receivers. (Basically, pick a moment).
    • Anyhow...

Where's Sid Bream's slide in Game 7 of the 1992 NLCS?

Where is John Elway's first SB win vs. GB at?

And what about UK's 3 in a row NCAA championship final appearances in the late 90s?

Notice that it says "stories" not "moments". There is a difference. Flutie's Hail Mary was a "moment" not a "story", so it should not be on the list, let alone #11. Methinks a BC grad wrote this article. Shoot, even if we were talking "moments" Flutie would barely crack the top 20 on an honest list.

As far as stories go, the Rose ban has to be in the top 5 along with the '94 Series cancellation. Ripken deserves to be up there. Villanova and N.C. State do not - those are moments, not stories per se. It's a shoddy list - much more could be criticized. Laettner's shot? A story? Here is what the intro says:

"A look back at some of the headline stars and most controversial issues dominating the sports pages of USA TODAY in the last quarter century:"

Laettner's shot did not "dominate the sports pages". It probably did for a day or two, but that is not a "dominant" story.

Some of what y'all are writing are proabably the top 25 moments in a local area or region. But UK making 3 straight Final Fours or the Braves winning a dramatic game 7 (quick trivia: who drove in Sid Bream), while nice moments for their towns/areas, are not nationally significant.

I have a problem with calling the list the "Greatest" sports moments, and then listing Pete Rose's banishment and a double homicide trial. Are these in the "Most Notable" category? Yes. But not "Great." So I'd retitle the category, because we're talking about two different things.

I think Pete's breaking Ty Cobb's record should be on the list.

I think Tiger's 1st Masters is too high.

Boise State making it to and winning a BCS bowl is up there, especially the way they did it.

Strug, as pointed out already, should be there. This is a cultural thing that has stood since the '96 Olympics. (I lived above a Romanian family - they were TICKED!)

Like it or not, ESPN's creation and prevalence should be higher. ESPN virtually runs sports now.

Andy, I think we're barking up the same tree. I have a fundamental problem with the way this list is concocted and advertised, if you will.

The Duke-UK game is no doubt one of the best in recent memory, and that moment is a vivid one (especially in Kentucky), but it should not be on the same list as Pete, the Series cancellation, or even Dale's death on the final lap of Daytona. (I'm no gearhead, but this is like Peyton Manning dying on 4th and goal in the Super Bowl in the 4th quarter).

Francisco Cabrerra. sp? I was watching it in my college apartment. Scratch that. I was graduated by then. I was watching it on my TV that I had in my college apartment the year before. :)

Yep, Earnhardt's death is definitely top 10 or higher.

Correct on both counts. I, too, was watching it on a dorm TV, and though not a Pirates fan, I was with a Bucs fan who was not happy, that Bream of all people scored the run. I was just ticked that Rent-a-Braves would play in another WS they were destined to cough up.

Which reminds me, wouldn't the Bills' Super Bowl ineptitude and the Braves playoff flops be compelling stories?

I dislike the Braves just because of the arrogance of their players, their stupid owner, their wife-beating manager, the bandwagoning of their fans, and their Rent-a-Team mentality. It's purely subjective. I'm not going to try to do logical gymnastics to prove a bias, like some people I know  I admit my biases are subjective . I stopped liking the Braves at all long before they beat my Reds in a playoff series.

I think I would include the USA basketball dream team of the 1992 Barcelona games. Not just because of the lineup:

Barkley, Bird, Drexler, Ewing, Magic, Jordan, Christian Laettner (snicker), Karl Malone, Chris Mullin, Stockton, Scottie Pippin, David Robinson

But because of the global recognition it brought USA basketball, how it inspired foreign players, and captured the country's imagination.

Besides that, it did what few sports get to do...it compiled the very best of the best from a sport onto one team. Oh, and Christian Laettner, too.

Uh, isn't Liberty Media the owner of the Braves, like 'em or not? Ted T. is long gone, I believe.

    What a stupid article.

Not a single Alabama victory over Auburn is listed.

    I should've put former owner. E-3

Ali vs. Foreman? I thought we were talking the last 25 years?

RBell has a little point about the Dream Team. I wonder if they inspired the international revolution in the NBA (which is either part of the NBA's problem or a reaction to the problems in the NBA), or did the Dream Team reveal the international influence on basketball and then subsequently, the NBA?

I think game 6 of the '86 W.S. deserves to be mentioned, but not because of Buckner. The Mets tied that game with good hitting, it was a great come-back.

Also, I feel that the '03 A.L.C.S. is the greatest 7 game series ever. The Red Sox W.S. win is a fuzzy story, but the year before, the Yanks & the Sox put on the most competitive show I've ever seen.
