Both of my USB ports quit working...

    I have a Dell Inspiron 5160
    Windows XP...

I got an power surge on my USB port message, and every time I hit reset, the message kept popping up.

So, I went to system restore, and chose a day last week when it everything was working fine...

Now, there is no message, but neither USB port is working.

Is there a way to turn them on?

Without them, I can't print anything...
or transfer my needed files to my keydrive, etc....

    Thanks for any info.

Start/control panel/system/hardware tab/device manager - see if there are any explanation points or question marks to the left of the usb devices. If there are click on that one and right click and ask for properties. It may give you some idea what is wrong.

If not you can choose to update the driver and let it go on the net to find them, if there is anything wrong with drivers that should cure it. Do this on each one that has one of the marks/points on it.

Also have you had the case open just before the problem? Maybe you unplugged something?? just a thought.

You may also want to go to Start and Run.

Type in services.msc and hit enter.

Check to see if USB was shut off there.

there are no question marks beside any of them...

Where do I choose to update the drivers?

Found how to.. I had it search for updates, and it said everything is up to date... Now what?

    go to www.driverguide.com

search for software drivers somewhere on that page.

    user name: drivers
    password: all

    search for USB 2.0 drivers

I'd go into device manager and uninstall the usb drivers and let windows reinstall them. If that does not take care of it I'd say you may have gotten something damaged.

Last chance effort - you could pick up a pci card (If you have a free slot) that has usb jacks on it.

Don't know if you've tried it... you probably have.

Shutting down and restarting after that restore you did?

Where are your usb ports physically? All in one place? If in two different places you might switching from one place to the other if you have open ones, they may be driven separately.

NO, I hadn't... come to think about it.. with the restore, it shut down and restarted, so I hadn't thought to do it again... I am going to try that now...

Thanks for both of you all helping... The drivers are up to date, and under properties it says both USB ports are working properly...

I am not getting the message now, but they don't run anything I connect to them...

I am not talented enough to actually take it apart or anything like that, so I may have to take it to a pro...

Everything else seems to be working fine...

I am going to shut down and restart now.

    Pray for me....

Tim, check to be sure bios didn't have something change.

Or just give up on Windows.

    www.ubuntu.com

Seriously, you could even try a live Linux CD just to be sure the USB ports are not fried for some reason. If they work in LInux, you have a software problem, rather than hardware.

A last resort would be to go to your device manager and right click on the USB devices and choose uninstall.

Then shut down and restart. If they are working properly, the system should redetect them and load the drivers.

    Whew..... I am back....

I restarted it last night, then couldn't get on the internet...
That stupid message started again, and IE wouldn't load...
So, after trying to get rid of the message for 45 minutes, I got fed up, system restored it to last week, and went to bed.....

I got up this morning, the USBs still do not work, but I don't have the message...

After researching this on the internet, I am pretty sure it is a motherboard issue...

    tim,

Go to www.pcpitstop.com and run tests.

Click 'Full Tests' on the left of the screen.
    Click Anonymous on next page.
    and then go.

Takes approx 4 minutes and they should be able to tell you if it is mb problems.

I will... I just noticed that I have no sound! Usually I keep it muted, because I hate to hear all the beeps and stuff... lol...
But I just tried to watch a video on CNN, and when I unmuted it, I still have no sound! I am afraid my suspicions are being confirmed....

When this happened last night, I had my scanner plugged into the USB port... It wouldn't have sent a surge to the computer and fried something would it?

I will try your link SF.

it is possible the surge fried a part of your motherboard.

Only other thing that could cause problems such as yours would be a nasty virus. make sure virus definitions are up to date.

But it definitely looks like your mb is on way out.
