Got any you want to share?

I'll start the thread off with one:

Water in the evening. Then your plants won't get fried by the sun.

Am starting to believe plants grow at night, not in the day (as previously believed).

    Does anyone know?

I'm not sure when the plant does most of its growing.

I have been told that watering early in the morning or late in the day are the best times to water your gardens. If you water in the middle of the day, a lot of the water evaporates and it tends to act as a magnifier to burn the plants.

When planting roses put a couple of banana skins in the hole first. You should have nice healthy roses. [IMG]

Used coffee and tea grounds make good fertilizer, especially on roses or any other flowering bush.

White fly do not like the herb basil.

Roses apparently like having garlic growing nearby. [IMG]

Sprinkle dried blood (from the garden store) to fend off pesky deer and various other critters. Reapply after every rain becouse it washes off.

DO WASH your hands thoroughly after using Blood Meal tho. There was a news report a few years ago that said Mad Cow Disease can be spread by blood meal. It is used in some cattle feed as well as a soil preparation.

Better to be safe. (One site claimed you should wear a mask and not use this when it's windy.) Bone Meal is used quite extensively by rose gardeners.

For those vegetarians amoung us; sprinkling dried tofu doesn't work to keep the deer away! [IMG]

An alternative to dried blood is wolf or coyote urine but it's expensive and has the same properties of washing off in the rain.

Best idea is to plant things that the deer don't like but they like just about everything. My dachshund enjoys chasing (and catching! ) the rascally rabbits, they've learned to quickly clear the yard when he comes, but the deer aren't so quick to learn. Cracker Jack looooves to chase the deer. He really thinks that one day he'll catch one!

Doesn't human hair discourage deer? I saw that in a movie once. They took hair from the barber shop and sprinkled it all around a baseball field to discourage the deer from eating the newly sprouted grass.......

Arggggh, the deer got the phlox near the house last night! :(

Hair only works if the deer aren't hungry, (and they are alway hungry) it is a bother to them in much the same way it is if we got a hair in our mouth.

A 30.06 helps keep the antelope out of my garden.

Seriously, we put up a bird feeder on the edge of the garden and it did not get much attention from the great variety of birds around here. THEN we put in a bird bath and can't keep the water full or the feeder seeded. AND it keeps the birds out of the garden!

What about talking to your plants... Does that help them grow?... Or do they have to be listening? :D ... What about playing music for them does that help house plants?... Hey I heard this one time and am just trying to find out if these are true!... Brother Glen [IMG]
