VeggieTales - new movie

    At Big Idea Productions, the idea is that kids' entertainment can teach children a thing or two about morality and religious faith yet still trigger a belly laugh.

    The independent studio from Chicago is about to find out if mainstream moviegoing audiences agree. Its first feature-length film, "Jonah -- a VeggieTales Movie," opens Friday.

    Big Idea has put $14 million into the movie, making it a gamble even though the company has sold nearly 30 million of the startlingly successful "VeggieTales" animated videos over the past nine years.

    Opening with solid results in sixth place was the children's film Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie which grossed an estimated $6.5M from 940 theaters for a stellar $6,915 average.

    Based on the decade-old home video series featuring talking vegetables who reenact Bible stories, the G-rated film took advantage of being the only kidpic in the marketplace and the first family film in almost two months.

    Artisan opened VeggieTales primarily in the regions where the property is best known including the south and midwest. This Friday, the distributor will add several hundred more runs in existing markets and plans to go fully national on October 18th.

    When the Newsboys sing their song In the Belly of the Whale, there is one part where he says, good lord, what a big mouth, is this not the same as using the Lords name in vain?

    Make sure that when you go to see the movie, you stay for all of the ending credits. The second song is hilarious (it was my wife's favorite part of the whole movie).

    The cumulative gross receipts are $16,025,403 as of yesterday, which is excellent for a Christian (animated) movie.

    I saw it this past weekend. I didnt understand the words to the Newsboys song until I got home and watched the sing-a-long video we had bought earlier. I wondered about the "good Lord" thing, too.
    Overall, I think it was great. I took my two girls and two teenagers from church. They really got into it. I think I was expecting it to be funnier than it was, but it WAS a good movie, and SO MUCH better than whats usually playing at the theaters.

    Yeah, I expected it to be funnier also. I also expected it to have less "church humor" in it so that unbelievers would enjoy it more. But when it was over, I realized it was just like any other Veggietales episode, only longer.

    I liked it, but I was just a little disappointed.

    We took our two boys ages 7 and 4 and they both loved it. The youngest wanted to know when we could buy to movie to watch at home. My wife and I also enjoyed it, although there were a couple slow moving parts of the movie. Overall it was a good movie and both our boys had a good time watching it.
