Verlander was filthy, as they say, last night. He was throwing 102 in the 9th inning! The last Tiger no-hitter was by Jack Morris in 1984, which, by the way, was the last time the Tigers won the World Series. I feel it coming on this year, too. Last night's game also put them into a tie for first with the Indians. Cleveland's luck has run out and I expect them to fade away. The White Sox are done. The only team left to deal with are the Twins and their luck. Assuming the Tigers make the playoffs, I think they will get back to the World Series, although the Red Sox look pretty good with much better pitching this year.

I haven't watched much baseball this season...but his effort last night made this fantasy team owner smile a little bigger than usual!

Just a week ago, the "luck" factor of the Tigers was equal to that of the Twins. Today, the Twins are deemed to be unluckier than the Twins. Sorry Andy  http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/AL_2007_standings.shtml

As I posted days ago, this is Detroit's division to lose. Cleveland is playing - or was playing - over their heads. The Twins are going to have to make a huge run to get back in it, and the ChiSox are imploding. It's Detroit's division to lose, unless the bullpen does them in. I think it won't.

Congrats to Verlander for throwing the no-no. One of these days, I'd like to discuss the merits of the no-no. :) And by the way, I promise, my HOF list is coming.

Just because the Twins haven't been lucky so far, doesn't mean it won't kick in like it did last year. To be honest, I don't fear the Twins as much as last year; I wouldn't be surprised if they and the Indians end up about the same - approx. 5-10 games behind the Tigers at year end. You are right, this division is the Tiger's to lose.

A no-hitter is often a credit to the defense and it also takes a little luck. I watched all 27 outs on mlb.com (in a matter of minutes), and there were about 4 unusually good defensive plays in that game made by Inge, Casey, Ordonez and Perez (the latter two being the best). The DP by Perez and Polanco was great and very fortunate. If there had not been a guy on first (from a walk), the hit towards Perez would have probably gone through, since Perez was shaded towards 2nd base in his DP depth position. That said, Verlander still struck out 12 and was very dominant. But I've probably seen more dominant games that did not end up as a no-hitter.

I saw the highlights of this at lunch today, that was amazing! 102 in the 9th is just out of this world.

You're stealing my thunder, Andy. I believe, as a general rule, that no-hitters are good, but not the earth-shattering accomplishment some would believe. Heck, you can lose a game with a no-no. I don't recall a combined perfect game, but there are many combined no-nos. I think the Expos once used everyone but the ball girl to combine for a no-no. Don't get me wrong - I don't think it's a ho-hum deal, but you hit the nail on the head that it's a tribute to the "D" as much as anything. Of course, perfect games, are, too. And both require luck.

One final thing. In a world that is constantly changing, it's good to see that you will ignore reason, facts, and logic, and dog the Twins any chance you get with your bias  (It's funny how ballpark luck takes time to kick in in a domed stadium). Still, always good to talk to a fellow baseball fanatic...we need you around more in here, Andy

Goes for you, too, PastorSBC :)

Last week after Schilling lost his no-hitter in the 9th, I saw a list of active pitchers without a no-hitter. Quite a list - guys like Clemens, Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz and Schilling - most likely, all Hall of Famers. And then there are guys like Johnny Vander Meer (your Reds) and Virgil Trucks (my Tigers) who threw 2 no-hitters in a season, with VM's back-to-back! In fact, Trucks was only 5-19 the year he threw 2 no-nos!

As for the Twins, I promise that I will not diss them for an entire year, if the Tigers win the World Series this year.

As a statistic, it looks great. It's really hard to no-hit any team, judging by the list of great pitchers who've not got one yet. The real tale is his next few starts.

It is amazing to see the names of the guys who have not had a no-hitter. However, I think it also speaks to the fact of what great pitchers they really are. Any MLB pitcher can have one special night where everything falls into place. Yet these guys have proven they can pitch even when they do not have outstanding stuff. That is what IMO makes them Hall of Famers.

Not to take away from Verlander, or go O/T, but 1991 W.S. game 7 is the best pitched game of all time.

I've also often thought that. Seems like I can remember at least one or two in the last decade or two that pitched a no-hitter but lost, though the names escape me (Matt Young, perhaps one of 'em?). I know there have been many combined no hitters.

Vander Meer is interesting. In his two no-hitters, he had 4 Ks and 3BBs, and 7K's/8BB's respectively. However, in that same season (His first full MLB season) he won 9 in a row with two other CG SO. But I think he was a career .500 pitcher at best.

    Some other gems.....

Babe Ruth's complete game, 1 run victory in a 14 inning affair, game 4 of the 1916 W.S. Thirteen scoreless innings, still stands as the longest complete game victory in W.S. history.

24 consecutive wins by Carl Hubbell, (with three no-decisions) between July 17, 1936 to May 27, 1937.

63 consecutive saves by Eric Gagne. Incredible.

    Good stuff, Curtis.

Did I hear Fox Sports Radio right? There's controversy over whether or not the radar guns actually registered the 100+ pitches last night for Verlander?

It's tempered by the fact that the pitcher was Jack Morris, a Detroit Tiger who deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. It's the '87 team that I hate the most. '91 not so much.

Don Larsen's perfect game in the '56 Series was pretty clutch.

Probably the greatest single pitched game in baseball history, considering the stakes, I agree.

One should give honorable mention to Harvey Haddix's 12 inning perfect game performance, which he incidentally lost in the thirteenth, due to an unearned run on an error, and only one hit, I believe.

Oh yes, I forgot about Harvey Haddix. I think that may be one of the greatest games ever pitched. 12 perfect innings. That is a feat.
