Washington, D.C., April 15, 2009- The leader of the nation's largest combat veterans' organization said a leaked government document that mentions disgruntled military veterans as potential security threats should have been worded differently, but he takes no issue with the document's purpose: to assess possible threats to the safety and security of the United States.

"A government that does not assess internal and external security threats would be negligent of a critical public responsibility," said Glen M. Gardner Jr., the national commander of the 2.2 million-member Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. and its Auxiliaries.

"The report proves that DHS is doing its job, and that's to protect America and Americans," said Gardner, a Vietnam veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps from Round Rock, Texas.

Kind of hard to publish a threat risk analysis without grouping threats into categories. It is no different than identifying the black panthers or Arian Nation for who or what they are.

But there is a difference between identifying risks based on what they believe (black panthers and Arian Nation to use your examples) and identifying risks based on what they are capable of.

Veterans present a risk, not due to their beliefs but due to their training and ability. The guy who wants to kill you but does not have the ability is a threat, because he is liable to try. The guy who is able to kill you but does not want to is not a threat, UNTIL you make him want to, and at that point he becomes more of a threat because if he tries his odds of success are much greater.

I think everyone can see that the wording of the DHS report was bad, but I think their analysis is correct. If our government continues down the path of the last 3 months, giving up our sovereignty, crippling our economy, penalizing our most successfully people and rewarding the least. Giving up the individual liberties that so many service men have fought and died for. If we continue down this path we are going to invite the wrath of some veterans and they are more likely than the sheep of society to take action when they see their nation under the threat of a domestic enemy.

Your statements are exactly right, especially the one I emphasized with red. That is why the one word "disgruntled" is important not to leave off the word vet. Most vets may have the ability to harm someone but do not have that desire. And, not all disgruntled vets have a desire to harm anyone. However, a disgruntled vet has the potential or reason to harm the nation. All the report said is they are being actively recruited by groups seeking to harm the country.

This is no reflection on the vets, it is simply saying these groups are actively seeking them.
