Vista security problem

    Let me just say right off, I hate Vista. Unfortunately, that is what came on the cheap little laptop we bought for the youngest to use. So I learned by necessity and so far so good. This one has me stumped though.

    Darling daughter managed to get the machine SEVERELY infected. I haven't had a chance yet to see exactly where it all came from but she had some bad stuff on it. I managed to clean it up (again, this is twice in a month that she managed to download the newest stuff out there).

    The problem is that one of those infections turned off her security center and now it won't turn back on. The microsoft website is useless. If I go directly into the firewall section, I'm told that the firewall is working, but I can't get the options to set up the antivirus or adware programs. I jsut get a message that "Security Center can't be turned on".

    Any ideas?

    Wow, did some googling and this thread came up on my search :laugh:

    Found this and it sounds like a place to start. "click start, right click computer and click manage. answer the elevation prompt. double click services and applications on the left and single click services. look for security center. click start. hopefully you wont get an error. right click security center in services where it says startup type, choose automatic"

    You might also shut off any anti virus/malware software and try to turn it on.

    You could also "Go Back" to a time before your troubles began.

    I'm not surprised that this thread came up in your google. I couldn't find anything when I googled that remotely related. You get the gold star for best key word usage. :thumbs:

    Go here and choose Vista, and then Full Scan. Do everything it says as well as posting the scan logs. The site is extremely reputable as it is ran by a friend of mine who happens to be the point man for the virus/malware section of the forum I help run.
