And this silly little jihad that you are pushing against Wal-Mart had as much to do with this as a pinhead-sized pimple on an elephant's hip affects the comfort of the elephant.

    Exactly....
ya’ll can pick on Wal-Mart all you want, but they optimize the free market system and employ more people than any other company and at decent wages, with advancement possibilities and incentives.

Wal-Mart is viewed by the Democrats as competition in their quest to position themselves as savior of the poor.

Before you start the party there is something you need to know...Walmart is doing just fine. They are building new stores and moving forward. All businesses have ups and downs. Walmart is just going through the natural business cycle.

    ...except Wal-Mart

I know some of you guys hate to keep seeing this...but...

Hot start to shopping season, except Wal-Mart

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15908702/

Yeah....that must be it. Just not shopping the whole store. :)
Whatever the case, there is no way its because of a boycott. Boycotts do not work...do they?

Taking advantage of Communist Chinese slave labor is optimizing the "free market system"?

    Have you seen this?...

If you were going to open a store in China, would you import Americans, with their pay requirements, or hire indigenous workers who will gladly accept the prevailing wage?

I started to watch the film, but it's too long, and I do understand its focus. It is the lament of the mom and pop stores throughout America that cannot compete in this new business climate. It is sad, but a fact of life. If not Wal-Mart it would have been someone else, as their business model is modern and a natural progression of our capitalist society.

I'm sure the film went into the "predatory" buying practices WM employs, which forces manufacturers and suppliers to whittle their costs of doing business as far as possible in order to be assured an outlet for their products at a price WM will accept. But again this is modern business practice.

Costco is a chief competitor to Wal-Mart and actually has a significantly better business model, with far lower overhead, and lower prices, and they are a main focus for Wal-Mart. It has spawned Sam's Club, which cannot compete head to head with Costco, because of overhead, but will do well enough.

Sound business practices reap profits for investors and lower prices for the consumer, and these wonderful old companies that we all grew up with, disappear, mostly due to lack of buying power.

Um, slave labor, including prisoners, don't actually get prevailing wages; they often don't get wages of any kind. Nor are they in a position to accept or refuse the work.

I think rsr had a good point on one of the previous Walmart-boycott threads - which of the many boycotts is the effective one, presuming any are.

    Walmart just opened in India.

Do we actually know that wal mart keeps slaves in china so they do not have to pay for employees?

If I was a greedy capitalistic lover of money and did not hold a Christian or otherwise moral worldview, I would go to China and take advantage of their communistic slave labor. However, this does not make this a free enterprise venture but rather a capitalist company selling product to a "free" nation by taking advantage of labor in a communist nation.

This is only one component of the video and is not the focus.

I don't recall the video dedicating much time to this.

These "sound business practices" are not "sound moral practices". When they are depraved in so many ways in which they do business, it should not come as a surprise that they are so supportive of other depraved activities such as sodomy.

Go to the 1:00:22 mark of the video for the section on factory workers. Technically, they are not slaves as they do get paid. However, $3 a day isn't too far above $0.

    Wal-Mart Salary Comparison:

Chinese Factory Worker =$3,380 (per annum)
    Average Sales Employee =$13,861(per annum)
    Lee Scott (CEO) 2005 =$27,207,799

Net Worth of Walton Family Members:

    Helen Walton =$18,000,000,000
    Alice Walton =$18,000,000,000
    John Walton =$18,200,000,000
    Rob Walton =$18,300,000,000
    Jim Walton =$18,300,000,000

"We really work day and night in order to get the wage of $3 a day." - Chinese Factory Worker

"Made in the USA. Means a job for somebody...American goods mean American jobs." - Old Wal-Mart Commercial

Technically not being a slave, is not being a slave at all. So then the comment that wlamart has slaves in china is inaccurate.
Instead of comparing with american salaries, how about comparing them with other chinese salaries. What do people in china get paid on average? if this $3. an hour is fairly average I do not see what the compait is, the problem isn't wal mart but china itself, you'll have to do something about them instead.

You're right. I thought they were renting Chinese prisoners as slave labor the way some manufacturers do. My bad.

Considering the fact that Wal Mart's sales were still five times greater than their next largest competitor for November, I don't think the boycott has had much, if any, of an effect. A tenth of a percent decline in sales, against the bottom line, means that a $1,000 investment would pay $98.60 for the month instead of $98.61.

If there was a boycott in effect against Wal Mart, it was not noticeable on Friday afternoon in the store in West Nashville on Charlotte Pike. At about 2:00 p.m., it took me the better part of 15 minutes to locate a parking space, and with every checkstand running full blast, I waited in line for 30 minutes to check out.

1st it is not a hour, but a DAY.

Beijing's residents' salaries, at 3,764 yuan (US$430) per month. Which comes out to about $20 a day. The average factory worker in china makes 8-9 US dollars a day. Wal-Mart buys from shops that pay their workers $3 US Dollars a DAY.

The money that a Tianjin factory worker gets to make one boot is so small that if every salary in the factory were doubled, the final shelf price in a U.S. retail outlet would increase from $49.99 to $51 and change. Yet, we shop at Wal-mart to save that 2 dollars.

If Wal Mart disappeared tomorrow, who really cares? Go to another store.

It's not the boycott, it is the fact that they done away with lay-away. I know people that has said they are shopping elsewhere that has lay-aways.
