Well, you all know what a Johnny Cash freak I am.

Just got back from seeing the new Johnny Cash biopic, "Walk the Line".

I can't say enough good things about it.

Joaquin Phoenix does a tremendous job of showing the desperation of addiction and the depths to which people can sink, killing himself by degree and dragging his marriage down with him.

He also captures the rise from deer in the headlights stage fright stricken JR to the fire breathing tower of power who nearly drives the prisoners at Folsom Prison to riot with a blistering version of "Cocaine Blues".

Joaquin Phoenix doesn't really look or sound all that much like Johnny Cash, but when he launches into "I Got Stripes", he truly does capture the raw energy and passion of the man.

Then, there's the other half of the equation, June Carter.

God bless Reese Witherspoon. Sweet enough to win his heart, but strong enough to fight off the demons that surround him.

What a tremendous job she did. She sang great, too.

I got some Johnny Cash songs I listen to. I like A Boy Named Sue, and Daddy Sang Bass.
Looking forward to renting the DVD. This summer I guess.

I saw "Walk the Line" today after work. It is now, and forever more will be, my favorite movie. The intensity of the acting by Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon was simply overwhelming to me.

When I was a youngster in school as a reward for making straight A's I was able to buy a Johnny Cash album. I grew up listening to his albums and singing along.

As basically a lifelong Johnny Cash fan I think this movie is great, great, GREAT!!!!

my wife and I picked up the DVD and watched it last night. We both really enjoyed it. I did not know that much about Cash's life. It was an interesting movie. If you have not seen it I would recommend it.

Saw it, and have one major problem with it. Johnny Cash's first wife was NOT the witch this movie made her out to be. She was very supportive of his career, in his early days.

I understand Roseanne Cash walked out of the movie.

Good acting & subject matter, yes. But I don't like revisionist history. The mean wife makes for better film-making.

I didn't get that impression from the movie. I don't think the movie made her out as a witch. When his music started providing for the family she wasn't complaining. Before that I think any wife would be a little upset if they were being evicted with a baby on the way. As for the reaction to JC hanging pictures of June Carter or her telling June to stay away from her kids, again I see that as a natural reaction. Maybe it was a little exaggerated, but not to the claims of Roseanne Cash, who of course would not like it. Others have come out and sid it was not completely off the mark. I'll try and find the interviews.

Bro. Curtis, I do not doubt what you say as hollywood does that all the time. Is there a book or something that supports what you say? If there is I would like to read it.

And that's why I watch very few, selected movies. I would rather watch fiction, than a fictionalized account.

I'll look around for you, to see if I can find anything.

I never knew Johnny Cash was evicted, either. I thought he did very well, after the Air Force. I never read about any hard times, after his childhood, which by all accounts, was very hard. Maybe he was a little strapped for cash when he was going to broadcasting school, but never evicted. Cash got out of the service in '54, and was a famous country performer in '55.

I don't go to the movies, but read a lot of good things about it. I like Johnny Cash music and have a few CD's I play. What impressed me most about Johnny Cash, the man, is just that; the man. He gave so much to so many in his industry along the way. No one had a bad word about Cash. He wasn't afraid to share his Lord with his colleagues and they weren't ashamed to give him credit.

If I were a moving goer, I would love to see it.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Like I said, there was a bit of exaggeration, but it didn't portray her as a viscious shrew. The movie did a good job at making her human. That's what I was getting at. I think any movie based on any true story is going to take a bit of dramatic liscense. This, of course, bothers some more than others. Did you like the movie otherwise, (just curious)?

No, I didn't. I'll admit it was very well acted. But lies are lies, whether or not they get called "artistic liscense".

Johnny Cash is a mighty giant of a hero of mine. I love his songs, and his voice. I don't see why we have to manipulate his life story to sell movie tickets.

It is the nature of the human flesh, Curtis. It was passed down from Adam and Eve and 'man's original sin'.

Man has to denigrate anything or anyone that man disagrees with even when man knows deep down in his heart he is wrong.

It is called giving in to the flesh.

No, that was her sister. Rosanne has said that she understands why her mother was portrayed that way and said that it was a reasonable protrayal.

That was her sister (forget which one) that was so upset about the movie.

I have to be honest, I don't think she came off all that badly.

I mean, if I was a woman trying to raise three children and my husband couldn't keep a job and then became a drug addict, I'd be a little [upset].

Now that I've had a little more time to think about it and having seen the movie several more times (it's the second DVD I've ever gone out and bought), what bugs me much more than Vivian's portrayal is that, other than the fact that he wanted to sing Gospel music, there's no mention at all of his faith.

That Johnny Cash was a man of great faith and that he struggled very hard to reconcile his faith in Christ with his drug addictions is the best known fact about him.

The movie doesn't show anything at all about his faith in God being the catalyst for so much of his turn around.

To me, making about about Johnny Cash without mentioning God is like Field of Dreams without the cornfield.

I remember seeing Johnny Cash and John Lennon on the Mike Douglas show (just as a note of trivia, that show was filmed in the same building I would later work in at First Union).

When Johnny mentioned that he used to be a door to door appliance salesman, Lennon said, "Let's see you sell me a vaccum cleaner."

So, Johnny got up and gave his salesman speech. It was pretty bad.

He and Lennon sat back down and Lennon said to him, "Well, at least you can sing!"

We rented and watched the DVD last night. Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon were awesome. Bro. Curtis has wrapped up my take on the rest.
