The last Civil War widow died somewhere around 2020. She was 101 and born in 1919. She married the Civil War veteran in 1939 when he was 97 and she was 20.

Ya'll may not know this but - this was a common occurence back in the day,

No nursing homes. No help/benefits. An old veteran may have outlived his wife and children.

He needed help in his old age - someone to take care of him. She would receive his pension when he died.

Both gave help and both received help. A few of these couples even had children.

Yes, we must not be too quick to jump up and down when we see a behavior due to the economic realities of a past culture. Agreeing to indentured servitude as in the bible is not advocating slavery as in America. OTOH, involuntary servitude, like Joseph experienced, and the slaves of America is always wrong.
