    Was God propitiated or were our sins expiated?

    Rom. 3:21. But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets,
    22. even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction;
    23. for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
    24. being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;
    25. whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed;
    26. for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. (NASB, 1995)

    21. But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from law, although the law and the prophets bear witness to it,
    22. the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction;
    23. since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
    24. they are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus,
    25. whom God put forward as an expiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins;
    26. it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies him who has faith in Jesus. (RSV, 1971)

    21. But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by the law and the prophets,
    22. the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction,
    23. since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God;
    24. they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
    25. whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed;
    26. it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus. (NRSV, 1989)

    21. But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by the law and the prophets,
    22. the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ {Or [through the faith of Jesus Christ]} for all who believe. For there is no distinction,
    23. since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God;
    24. they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
    25. whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement {Or [a place of atonement]} by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed;
    26. it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus. {Or [who has the faith of Jesus]} (NRSV, 1989, with the margin readings in brackets)

    Was God propitiated-Propitiate- to gain or regain the favor or goodwill of

    or were our sins expiated? Expiate- appease, to put an end to, to extinguish the guilt incurred by, to pay the penalty for, to make amends for <permission to ~their offenses by their assiduous behavior—Francis Bacon>

    Don’t think you should just use expiated without propitiated unless you like the Francis Bacon part.

    I like the Greek: Serving to expiate (to appease or give permission to) the mercyseat (lid of the Ark) for propitiation (to regain favor or goodwill)

    Propitiate- to gain or regain the favor or goodwill of
    propitiation 1) the act of propitiating 2)something that propitiates; specially an atoning sacrifice

    Expiate- appease, to put an end to, to extinguish the guilt incurred by, to pay the penalty for, to make amends for <permission to ~their offenses by their assiduous behavior—Francis Bacon>
    expiation 1) the act of making atonement 2) the means by which atonement is made

    “hilasterion”
    . Neuter of a derivative of G2433; an expiatory (place or thing), that is,
    (concretely) an atoning victim, or (specifically) the lid of the Ark (in the
    Temple):—mercyseat, propitiation.
    Expiatory- serving to expiate

    Maybe both would be more appropriate: (to be expiated for propitiation)

    Propitiation is the atonement and expiation refers to the means by which atonement is made.

    So, to answer the question, God was not propitiated, rather he accepted Christ's sacrifice as the propitiation for our sin.

    We were expiated from sin by Christ's blood.
